In search of the Renaissance Geek

In Europe in the 16th century - when the world was a simpler place - there was such a thing as the Renaissance Man. A person who grew up in a time when it was possible to know everything there was to know.

Today, it's impossible to know everything. But what I want to know is, is it possible to know everything within an industry e.g. Computing?

Is there somone out there who thinks they know everything, or close to everything?

What is the most one person knows?

And more importantly, is that person worth the combined value of the number of people who have only part of his knowledge or is there a diminishing return on value for knowing everything as it still does not solve the problem of time?

I certainly don't know everything.  I do know that if someone comes up and says "I'm probably one of the top 10 people on this subject in the world", that guy is probably not in the top 100.
