Update Management Choices

If, like me, you've heard a rumour that patch management is a neccessary part of security you might be considering deploying one or more of the following products to help -

  • Microsoft Update (with or without Group Policy configuration)
  • Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)
  • Microsoft Baseline Security Analayzer (MBSA)
  • Systems Management Server 2003 (SMS)

It can be confusing to try and understand how each of these plays a part in an update managagement strategy that's why I think this comparison table is a useful way of understanding how each product fits into the process -
