Both this and Jingmei's blog post refer to using the stsadm -o addcontentdb method. If one were using the gradual upgrade approach, how does this differ from this process?

If you are implementing the gradual upgrade approach this process will not be required in your environment, if you are implementing a database migration and all of your My Sites exist in a single monolithic content database you will need to isolate your My Site site collections to a unique databases, typically through the use of STSADM -o backup and restore. If your My Site site collections reside in a database seperate your path based site collections, by first attaching the _SITE database for upgrade you can then attach the My Site content databases later to migrate to a new dedicated Web application.
