• Windows Defender Update clarification on KB932135

    Hi Folks –

Ive heard some confusion on the handling of the update approval for  MS07-010 / KB932135 released last Tuesday, Feb 12th.  For the few of you who subscribe to Windows Defender Definition Updates but DON’T have your auto approvals set up for these, just a reminder you’ll want to make sure you manually approve this update.  This definition update also contains a security fix for the Defender engine that you'll want to get installed.  I know most of you just let Auto Approvals handle your Definition Updates – but if there are any of you out there who don’t, this one you’ll want to approve.  As a best practice, setting up Automatic Approvals for the classification of Definition Updates is highly recommended.  This is because new Defender Definition Updates come out frequently, replacing the old ones, which expire fairly rapidly.

Below just a pointer for anyone who has not setup auto approval rules -so you can do this easily.

To make sure your Auto Approvals are set for Definition Updates, verify in your synchronization options, under products Windows Defender is selected and under Update Classifications, the update classification Definition Updates is also selected (this will ensure they are synching from Microsoft to your WSUS server).  To set the associated automatic approval rules, go to options from the WSUS home page, and click Automatic Approval Options.  Be sure the “Automatically approve updates for installation by using the following rule”  check box is checked – then under Approve for Installation – click Add/Remove Classification and verify or add Definition Updates.   Once these AA rules are set do a manual synchronization.   Because Auto Approval rules do not apply retroactively, you’ll want to be sure that you still manually approve any Windows Defender updates which have been synchronized previous to setting up these rules.

    thanks - Bobbie

  • KB 931836 classification reminder

Hi WSUS Admins - Just a reminder, the DST update made available to your WSUS servers today (KB931836) is classified as an update rollup so AU and SMS/ITMU pick it up too.  For WSUS that means, you'll want to make sure either to modify your auto approval rules (if you use them), or remember to approve this update manually.

Also, for any of you laggerts out there still using (let's see if i still remember how to spell it), ...... SUS, the update will be available since we were able for SUS, to classify it appropriately for pickup (critical).

As I posted Friday, remember the 931836 update plays nicely with any previous DST updates released earlier you may have installed.

    Cheers-

    thnks - Bobbie

  • Information on new update for DST coming to DLC & WSUS

On 9 February 2007 we released a Windows Time Zone Update Rollup, KB 931836 to the Download Center.  This update rollup replaces KB 928388 (global time zone update) and KB 929120 (W. Australia Time Zone Update).  It includes all the time zone changes in the previously released time zone updates and additional time zone changes that were adopted and announced after we created KB 928388.

KB931836 will be available on MU and through WSUS on February 13, 2007 as well.

We would like to alert our customers as this is a slight change from what I bloged on Dec. 13th, 2005 when we indicated the Windows Time Zone Update (KB 928388) was going to be assigned a high priority or critical classification for the February 13th release.

While the Windows time zone update will be categorized as an Update Rollup and hence offered automatically to customers who signed-up for Automatic Updates, it will be under KB 931836.  At the same time as the update roll-up goes out, KB 928388 and KB 929120 will become   superseded.  A few additional noteworthy considerations:

    -          KB 931836 installs over any previously installed time zone update (KB 928388 or KB 929120 or both of them).  Customers do not need to uninstall any of the previous KBs to install the update rollup.

    -          KB 931836 is cumulative, so it includes all changes that KB 928388 and 929120 included.  Customers who have not installed the previous time zone update only need to install KB 931836 to have the latest time zone data

    -     Customers who already deployed KB 928388 should evaluate if any of the 6 specific time zone changes addressed in KB 931836 merit deploying this update immediately.  If systems are not directly affected, deployment can be scheduled at the next available opportunity.  Microsoft recommends that all customers standardize on the most current Windows cumulative time zone update to ensure consistency of the time zone database on all systems.

    -     Customers who use SMS ITMU will be able to use ITMU to deploy the update as it is classified as an Update Rollup.

    -          Outlook and Exchange tools and patches are available and will be released on Office Update and Microsoft Update and available to WSUS on Feb 13th as well.
