• The upcoming MVP Summitt

This year's MVP Global Summitt is going to be awesome for the Software Distribution team and our MVP's!   The  team, which consists of the Windows Update and Microsoft Update sites, publishing infrastructure, the WSUS  (server & client), BITS and the Group Policy teams, are completely jazzed about meeting with our MVPs at this year's summitt!!!  Our MVP's are coming in from destinations spanning from Aachen, Germany  to Medicine Hat, Alberta;  from  Mosonmagyaróvár, Hungary to Houston ( to name a few)!  This year,  the moons and planets have aligned in our favor and we have the perfect "window of opportunity" to dig deep into MVP feedback on current pain points, gaps & future features before plans solidify for the future versions.   The product team is psyched to hash this out, and to get perspective on our customer needs, with and through, our awesome MVPs!

For our product team session schedule, our first will start with discussion  on customer experience, deployment options, and troubleshooting tips on WSUS, Our next five sessions and roundtable discussions will get right into our products Windows Vista directions,  and future versions of  WSUS, GP, and Microsoft Update.   We're  really looking forward to the face time and the direct discussions with our MVPs!!

  • Client DCOM access issue - preventing installation

Some new information in on client troubleshooting - A Customer has  reported one or more clients failing to install updates with an error 0x80070005.  Investigation shows this issue to be related to a DCOM access problem.   The root cause is is related to either  an incompatible default DCOM impersonation level, or corrupt default access permissions on the client.  A KB is in the works; draft information about the issue can be found on the WSUS wiki at: http://www.wsuswiki.com/80070005

  • Using a SQL cluster as the WSUS backend

We've had some customer requests for backend SQL cluster support in the next version of WSUS.  Currently, this is not an officially supported configuration for WSUS, but we have had a customer or 2 successfully set-up this configuration.  While satisfaction, results, and mileage may vary; we wanted to share the process these customers followed to achieve this configuration.   Check out the steps here on the WSUS wiki - if you discover anything new, or have interesting results please share your comments on the Wiki page!

  • New Information on Office Administrative Install Points and WSUS update support

There has been some confusion on why WSUS does not detect for and update needed Office Updates on some clients.  KBs have recently been revised describing WSUS update support for  RTM and pre-patched Admin Installation Points on both Office XP and Office 2003, and how to get patched AIPs to a point where they can be supported by WSUS without having to reinstall. Check out both these cross linked KBs for more information.
