• Friday International Update - TechNet Wiki Day Winners - March/2014

The TechNet Wiki Day award of March was very disputed. Many articles in Portuguese and other languages were listed by the Selection Committee Articles.

The difficult task of defining a winner among all articles, only highlights the technical quality of these articles presented below:

Gold:     Filtro de lista no Outlook 2010 com lista do SharePoint 2010 by Denis Roberto Felix
Silver:   Instalando Servidor de Impressão no Server 2012 R2 by Raimundo Oliveira Junior
BronzeAtualizando o Windows Phone by Vinicius Mozart

Congratulations to all the winning articles and their authors.

The Gold medal articleFiltro de lista no Outlook 2010 com lista do SharePoint 2010 was also posted on Wiki Ninjas Brazil Blog and recognized by TechNet Wiki Day WINNER tag.

Congratulations Denis Roberto Felix and thanks for your commitment and dedication, still contributing to the growth and the quality of the our Microsoft TechNet Wiki Community.

    See you soon here !

  • Council Spotlight: Impact of the TechNet Guru Awards (May 2013 - March 2014)

This is an update blog post. The original post is from October 2013.

XAML guy is a member of the TechNet Wiki Community Council, and he owned the area of integrating the MSDN and TechNet forums better with TechNet Wiki.

And so the TechNet Guru Awards were born!

They cause some pain. We've had many debates on the forums about whether or not answers on the forums should be converted to TechNet Wiki articles. And we've written those reasons in detail before. Here are those blog articles:

And while we do that, we've had to be careful not to make the Wiki too much about a competition. And we've had to make sure we don't award articles that shouldn't be awarded (like if a solution was wrong or dangerous).

  • Wiki Life: How to Find Wiki Articles I Wrote

Hello and welcome everybody to our Wednesday - Wiki Life post.

Easter is gone with a lot of searching for Easter eggs. With this in mind I want to introduce you to the topic of this blog post.

Have you ever had the problem that you are looking for articles you have written two years ago? Or another case: Don't you remember the articles you have made an edit to? If so, you are not alone. I had the same problem for a long time. Fortunately, I found an article on our wiki - How to Find Wiki Articles I Wrote. It shows you a step-by-step instruction how you can find articles you have worked on. But you should not only read the article itself, you should definitely read through the comments. They give alternative solutions.

  • TNWiki Article Spotlight - Perform Basic Admin Operations using CSOM in SharePoint Online

Hi everybody, welcome to our TNWiki Article Spotlight.

Today I want to highlight the article named Perform Basic Admin Operations using CSOM in SharePoint Online, written by Geetanjali Arora.

This article wag recently published on the Wiki and is a good "how to start" with CSOM.

    CSOM?

CSOM is the acronym of "Client Side Object Model" and is a way to code client applications targeted to Office 365 (SharePoint Online).

Forget the Server Object Model in this case, and prepare to use new objects! (SPSite becomes Site, SPUser becomes User, etc...). You have also to think a little bit differently for your code: work with a ClientContext, load every object you want to use, ...

I recently "discovered" the use of CSOM for a personal project dedicated to SharePoint Online (more info here), and I found some interesting articles on the Wiki.

One of them is the article I choose to highlight in this post: Perform Basic Admin Operations using CSOM in SharePoint Online.

    Article Content

    Here are the TOC entries

This is a good start if you are interested by Office 365 and one of his best friend: CSOM!

  • Interview with a Wiki Ninja and 7-time WPF Guru Gold Medal Winner: Magnus (MM8)

Magnus MM8 is a 7-time Gold Medal winner of the WPF category of the TechNet Guru competition (see TechNet Guru Contributions).

    Some information about Magnus:

    • 26,922 Recognition Points
    • Microsoft Partner
    • 9 TechNet Wiki Articles
    • 40 Article Edits

    Some of his award-winning articles:

    Let's get to the interview!

Who are you, where are you, and what do you do? What are your specialty technologies?
My name is Magnus Montin and I am 28 years old. I live in the Swedish capital of Stockholm and work as a senior consultant for a Microsoft Gold Partner IT consultancy company where I am developing software on the Microsoft stack at client sites on a daily basis. My favorite technologies are primarily C# and WPF but I am also strong in ASP.NET MVC, Windows Forms, WCF, T-SQL and Entity Framework.

What are your big projects right now?
I am currently architecting and developing an N-layered .NET solution for exchanging information about financial instruments between a few different investment banks. Besides this I am also participating a lot in the MSDN forums, especially in the WPF forum.

What is TechNet Wiki for? Who is it for?
It's a great place for both developers and other it professionals to find and share solutions for all kind of issues regarding Microsoft technologies, regardless of whether you are a student or an industry leading expert.

What is it about TechNet Wiki that interests you?
All my contributions to the TechNet Wiki have so far revolved around the monthly TechNet Guru competition. I was more or less introduced to the TechNet Wiki by an announcement of this competition in the MSDN forums, which is where I spend most of my community time.

The competition is especially interesting in the sense that you get your articles reviewed and commented by the judges. Apart from the competition, the ever growing knowledge base of the TechNet Wiki and the possibility it brings to share your knowledge to a large audience is what interest me the most.

What are your favorite Wiki articles you’ve contributed?
The following articles are three of my favorites:

WPF/MVVM: Binding the IsChecked Property of a CheckBox to Several Other CheckBoxes:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/18821.wpfmvvm-binding-the-ischecked-property-of-a-checkbox-to-several-other-checkboxes.aspx
WPF: Programmatically Selecting and Focusing a Row or Cell in a DataGrid:

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/21202.wpf-programmatically-selecting-and-focusing-a-row-or-cell-in-a-datagrid.aspx
WPF: Exporting Data from a DataGrid Control:

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/19990.wpf-exporting-data-from-a-datagrid-control.aspx

What could we do differently on TechNet Wiki?
I've had some issues with formatting the articles I have contributed. The editor isn't very user friendly and it seems like it adds a lot of line breaks and other unnecessary space when you click the save button sometimes. This is obviously something that could be improved.

Do you have any tips for new Wiki authors?
Make sure you spend some time on actual writing an article and don't just include some code sample with no explanations about the solution. You should also spend some time on the formatting and the segmentation of the content as this will make the article so much more readable and valuable to the community. Besides explaining your solution the best you can, you could also provide some links to related subjects for further reading.

Please join me in thanking Magnus for all his contributions!
