• Interview with a Wiki Ninja: Susan Bradley, MVP – SBS

Welcome to our Monday Interview with a Wiki Ninja!

Today the interview will be with Susan Bradley. Susan is a MVP (Windows Server for Small and Medium Business) and a wiki contributor!

    Susan’s MVP Profile: http://mvp.microsoft.com/en-us/mvp/Susan%20Elise%20Bradley-7500

Who are you, where are you, and what do you do? What are your  specialty technologies?

My name is Susan Bradley, I'm located in Fresno California.  I'm a Certified Public Accountant and the Network admin for my firm.  I also assist in litigation consulting and technology with my firm.

I specialize in small business technologies, which is just about everything that is done in Enterprise but with less servers.

What are your big projects right now?

Right now I'm working with Amy Babinchak on the SMB kitchen project.  It's a year long multi media learning project that is focusing on the tools (HyperV), the knowledge  and resources that we will need in the SMB space going forward.

    http://www.thirdtier.net/enterprise-solutions-for-small-business/

Besides your work on TechNet Wiki, where do you contribute?

I blog at www.sbsdiva.com as well as the moderator at the http://patchmanagement.org/  listserve which focuses on patching issues for primarily Windows platform.  I also write on patching issues for https://windowssecrets.com/.

What is TechNet Wiki for? Who is it for?

The TechNet Wiki is really for everyone.  One of the most added to wiki those of us in the SMB space have put together is a listing of what external hard drives work well on the Small Business Server platform -http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/1780.external-backup-drives-compatibility-list.aspx  It's been going strong for three years now where people can add those devices they've had good luck with.  That's what the wiki is all about.  I call this the "been there, done that".  You can indicate what is real and relevant and what has worked for you and share it with others.

What do you do with TechNet Wiki, and how does that fit into the rest of your job?

My day job is enhanced by others sharing their information with me.  The wiki is like that.  We can all post what we know and all learn from each other.

What is it about TechNet Wiki that interests you?

What interests me about the wiki is how it can be a common place for all to share with.  It's not "my" blog it's a common location that everyone can call their own.

On what articles have you collaborated with other community members  on #TNWiki? What was that experience like?

Sometimes it's intimidating to edit someone else's work.  But don't be intimidated.  Your personal experience with something is a vital part of the knowledge base.  Microsoft's engineers and document writers can only go so far, they can't document real world like we can.

On what Wiki articles do you spend most of your time?

I've probably spent most time on the "Build documents" a series of wiki articles on common tweaks for SMB servers.

What are your favorite Wiki articles you’ve contributed?

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/1780.external-backup-drives-compatibility-list.aspx
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/1710.small-business-server-documentation.aspx

What are your top 5 favorite Wiki articles?

Probably all the docs listed here:

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/1710.small-business-server-documentation.aspx

What are the top 5 Wiki articles or areas that need more attention and development?

I need to go back and reread these documents now and ensure they are up to date.

Who has impressed you in the Wiki community, and why?

Ed Price has been tireless in tweaking a bit here and there on my articles..

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/profile/ed%20price%20-%20msft/?ws=leaderboard

What does success look like for TechNet Wiki?

When someone finds exactly what they need and leave a comment of "thanks!"

Do you have any comments for product groups about TechNet Wiki?

I'd say take a page out of the Exchange team's organization - http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/1629.wiki-exchange-server-portal.aspx where it's nicely laid out and easy to navigate.

     **************************************************************************

Thanks Susan for the Interview and the Wiki Contributions.

Keep up the good work and have a wonderful Wiki!

  • Brothers in Wiki

"Brothers in arms" is a pretty well know phrase or soundbite if you like. What is the actually meaning of this phrase? It means that men are fighting side by side. Like in World War Two in Europe or the Pacific the soldiers were eating, sleeping, training, fighting and dying together. It is like a close bondage between people. Same as the BizTalk community on the TechNet Wiki. Some of us write, speak, collaborate and hang out with each other like myself, Sandro Pereira, Saravana Kumar, Nino Crudele and Tord Nordahl (aka the BizTalk Crew).

The number of community contributors (brothers) for BizTalk residing from different parts of the world has grown to an impressive number. Below you will find the list of community contributors from The United-States, The Netherlands, Norway, United Kingdom, India, and Australia:

Recently two more people joined our ranks.  who wrote the article BizTalk: Generating Flat File Schema for File with Tag Identifiers not at the Beginning, Grouping Data by Element and Debatching and  who wrote the article BizTalk Server 2013: How to use SFTP Adapter. With them we have almost 25 people contributing article to the continuously growing number of articles you will find on the BizTalk Server Resources on the TechNet Wiki page of the TechNet Wiki.

The total number of articles is currently almost 220. That is an amazing number and it will easily grow to 250 by end this year. So keep it coming brothers!

  • Top Contributors Awards!! Team Foundation Server 2012, Dynamics CRM 2011, Windows 7 tips, AD RMS and still more Guru juiciness!! Slurp!

Welcome back for another analysis of contributions to TechNet Wiki over the last week.

First up, the weekly leader board snapshot...

A new personal best for Maheshkumar! Just short of a thousand revisions, as you'll see below!

Mostly language tags, but some other thoughtful work too. Great performance Maheshkumar.

Also, nice to see Ed, Naomi and Benoit all in the top five. Great work folks.

Special mention also to Benoit for topping the most articles chart for the last month!

As always, here are the results of another weekly crawl over the updated articles feed.

     Most Revisions Award
Who has made the most individual revisions

#1 Maheshkumar S Tiwari with 957 revisions over 746 articles. Wowsers, tag tastic! A new personal best for you!

#2 Naomi  N with 182 revisions over 70 articles. Great work as always Naomi!

#3 Ed Price - MSFT with 118 revisions over 56 articles. Welcome back to the charts Ed!

     Most Articles Updated Award
Who has updated the most articles

    Same as above...

    #1 Maheshkumar S Tiwari with 746 articles

    #2 Naomi  N with 70 articles

#3 Ed Price - MSFT with 56 articles

     Most Updated Article Award
Largest amount of updated content in a single article

The article to have the most change this week was new arrival and wonderful addition to the French community pages : Team Foundation Server 2013 - Vue d'ensemble et concepts sur l'outil.(fr-FR) by Hezequias

This is a great read for Team Foundation Server 2012 fans.. Note also the tag. Thanks Hezequias.

     Longest Article Award
    Biggest article updated this week

This week's largest document to get some attention is an oldie but goodie : Available Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 Plugin Messages by Jamie Miley.

It's thanks to Maheshkumar S Tiwari's obsessive tag work that he's dug this one up for attention.

I remember this article from before, because of the cut off column. Someone really should try to fix that...

     Most Revised Article Award
Article with the most revisions in a week

This week's most fiddled with article is another new arrival How to Rename a Windows 7 User Account and Related Profile Folder by TNJMAN.

28 revisions, mostly his own, as he buffed this to perfection, but also tweaks from Richard Mueller, Naomi  N and Maheshkumar S Tiwari

     Smallest Significant Edit Award
Size isn't everything! Every edit counts.

Ignoring the addition of tags, this week's smallest but most valuable tweak is to How AD RMS Works by Jim Groves.

It was by Santi Fernandez Muñoz, who realised it was missing the Other Languages section

Cross linking articles like this is very important to us, and if you spot any such missing translation likes, please be sure to add them, in the appropriately formatted way shown above.

     Most Popular Article Award
Collaboration is the name of the game!

The article to be updated by the most people this week is for the THIRD week running, is TechNet Guru Contributions for September 2013 by me!

As the month draws to an end, we saw a rash of new contributions from NINE people

Thank you everyone for contributing some outstanding work yet again!

Another outstanding performance by ninja Maheshkumar. If you see any added value you can add to articles as you go through them that would be great too. Extra sections, suggestions for missing content, and especially "see also"s. We like to try and link everything to something if we can, so readers can browse further for related articles.

One last article I'd like to mention is Top Contributors of Week:Records.

A great collection of stats, thank you for doing this Maheshkumar, a great idea!

Yet another record number of revised articles this week!
Luckily I've had time to make some urgent adjustments to the crawler and it all worked this week!

    Best regards,
    Pete Laker

  • Wiki Life: The new "Engage" section on TechNet Wiki (and the "Popular Topics" section)

Let's review the new section added to TechNet Wiki:

You can find the section here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/

We added it on the right side, under the "Help & Feedback" section.

We think this is the right place to add it, but we're open to hear other opinions (leave a comment below).

The problem, obviously, is that we didn't have a good link to and from the other TechNet Wiki community engagement tools.

Should this section be in the right panel on all the TechNet Wiki article pages as well?

And what do you think of the other sections on the Home Page?

Should we trade out the Popular Topics?

    Currently...

    Popular Topics

Here's how I'd list the popular topics/technologies on the Wiki, by tag use:

    1. Active Directory
    2. PowerShell
    3. SQL Server
    4. Hyper-V
    5. Windows 8
    6. Windows 7
    7. SharePoint
    8. System Center
    9. BizTalk

So based on this, we should replace Windows 7 with Windows 8 and add PowerShell, at least. Should we rotate some out and rotate some in?

Leave a comment with your thoughts!
