• Interview with a Wiki Ninja - Benoît Jester, a New French Contributor !!

Hello! Welcome to another Interview with a new Wiki Ninja! Today's interview is with... Benoit Jester. So, why did I interview him? Because he is a great friend of mine and he is pushing articles in French on the WIKI (he will push more than 100 articles in one year, he promised me) So other communities, get scared, we are coming with our French Articles!! ( I'm Satanic ^^ )

Just have a look at his excellent writing skills, and you will understand why I pushed him to come and contribute on the most prestigious wiki -> The TechNet WIKI!

Who are you, where are you, and what do you do? What are your specialty technologies?

Hello everyone. My name is Benoît Jester and I’m a SharePoint addict!

I discovered SharePoint in 2005, with the help of a SharePoint MVP, who detailed me the architecture of a SharePoint farm, before introducing me the Object Model. The beginning of a new career ! Freelance since 2008, I work actually (since 3.5 years
now) as a SharePoint Expert for a multinational, in Paris La Défense.

Tell us about the French communities on TechNet Wiki. How did it start? What’s it like? Is it growing?

Thanks to Gokan Ozcifci, I discovered the TechNet Wiki “World” a while ago.

I found this Wiki very interesting, and decided to add my contribution, but let’s be honest, there’s actually too few French articles. We have to work on it ! :-) So yes, the Wiki French community will grow up !

What are your big projects right now?

Professionaly, a big SharePoint 2013 enterprise portal will be published in a few months, for the entire group (150.000 potential users), the pressure increases slowly …

Personaly, I should soon make an announcement about a project I’m actually working on. I really hope that it will be appreciated and useful to the community! What’s the subject ? A secret for now, but stay tuned, I will be soon searching for beta-testers.

Besides your work on TechNet Wiki, where do you contribute?

In addition to my Wiki contributions, I will continue to write articles on my blog (spasipe.wordpress.com), dedicated to SharePoint 2013 (and friends) – Written in french only ! I worked a lot on it during the past year, and apparently it helped quite a lot of people. Goal achieved :-)

Cà tombe bien c’était le but :-)

What is TechNet Wiki for? Who is it for?

From my point of view, TechNet Wiki is for EVERYONE who is searching for technical information. You have so many topics and articles where you can find what you’re searching for, articles being written by skilled people. Not convinced? Go have a look! And don’t forget that you can contribute to these articles, too.

Who has impressed you in the Wiki community, and
    why?

When I read the “Top Contributors Awards” article on the Wiki Ninjas blog, I’m quite impressed by some members’ activities. 436 activities completed by Gokan last week, or 637 revisions by another Steef-Jan, it’s a HUGE contribution to the TechNet Wiki – and it’s only a few examples !

SharePoint Ninja & and SharePoint Pirate,

    Gokan Ozcifci

  • TechNet Wiki Community Council - A New Hope!!!

The TechNet Wiki Community Council is in motion and marching forward!

This is part of a series:

    1. Enter the Council
    2. A New Hope (this blog post)
    3. Council Strikes Back
    4. Return of the Council

We especially want to welcome new members (since "Enter the Council"):

    • Brent Groom
    • Yagmoth (Philippe)
    • Tord Nordahl
    • Zoltán Horvath
    • Naomi N

We've shifted a few people to other groups as we spawn up two new groups, the TechNet Wiki Advisory Group (this is more of a re-launch than "new"; MVPs who will give an advisory role and will moderate content across their areas) and the TechNet Wiki International Council (community language leaders who will help grow their language communities). So we've got some new members!

    Microsoft Employees (5)

    Observers:

    External (7)

And what are we doing? We're working on the TechNet Wiki Community Council Areas of Focus.

The basic idea is that we're pushing forward and making progress in a lot of areas.

I want to brag about (announce) the great things we have going in some of the areas...

    1. Guidelines & Best Practices
    2. Portal Growth - Yagmoth
      • Wiki: Technologies Portal - Yagmoth added a lot of technologies that were missing. And his flurry of activity on this page has reminded a lot of people that it's there! The result was 31 edits in July. Awesome!
    3. Cross-Linking Expansion - Richard Mueller
      • Richard is planning on this one. The basic idea is to add more in-line, embedded linking in the first paragraph of the articles (linking back to parent articles) and to add more links to Wiki articles in See Also sections.
    4. Feature Requests & Bugs - Ed Price (& Richard Mueller)
    5. Spam, Plagiarism, & Article Deletion - Peter Geelen (& Naomi)
      • Naomi and Richard helped find a lot of spam.
      • Naomi and Carsten have been identifying any plagiarism.
    6. TechNet Wiki Featured Articles - Ed Price (& Yagmoth)
      • Ed created this framework: TechNet Wiki: Featured Article Teams
      • The Russian, Chinese, and Portuguese Wikis were updated with new Featured Articles
      • The English Wiki has mostly been updating with the TechNet Guru winners.
      • Next: Another round on the non-English Wikis
    7. TechNet Guru (Leveraging Forums) - Peter Laker (& Ed Price)
    8. Wiki Ninjas Blog Planning
      • The bloggers are scheduled, and new bloggers have been added since May (after "Enter the Council"): Patris, Santosh, LeoPonti, & Brent Groom
    9. TechNet Wiki Discussion Forum Community Growth
      • Nobody is focusing on this right now.
    10. General Community Projects and Social Initiatives
      • Nobody is focusing on this right now.
    11. TechNet Wiki International Council - Bruno Lewin (& Ed Price, Yagmoth)
    12. TechNet Wiki Advisory Board - Ed Price (& Monica Rush)
      • Mission - To resurrect and grow the board: TechNet Wiki Advisory Board
      • This was re-launched.
      • We finished some communication tools.
      • Next step: More onboarding in the communication tools. Then a meeting.
    13. Wiki Ninja Belt Rankings - Ed Price (& Margriet Bruggeman)
      • We've adding people! We're finishing up adding the Interviewed Wiki Ninjas! Then we'll go through the Top Contributors!
      • The White Belt rewards have been staying up to date.
      • The Yellow Belt rewards (tweets to profiles) have started.
    14. Collaborating with Microsoft Field Representatives - Brent Groom
      • Working on a plan to leverage their content and customer interactions on TechNet Wiki.

So there you are! A lot of amazing things are going on! Let us know if you want to help with the council members with any of these individual efforts (or if you have any questions)!

       - Ninja Ed

  • Top Contributors Awards!!! Plus SharePoint, T-SQL, BizTalk & Ninja Belts YOU can win and wear with pride!

Welcome back for another analysis of contributions to TechNet Wiki over the last week.

First up, the weekly leader board snapshot...

Congratulations Richard! Back at the top table!

Gokan & Steve just behind, both almost identical as shown below, battling for 2nd and 3rd

As usual, here are the results of another weekly crawl over the updated articles feed.

     Most Revisions Award
Who has made the most individual revisions

#1 Richard Mueller with 178 revisions over 212 articles! Nice work Richard!

#2  with 170 revisions over 105 articles! Just ahead of Gokan!

#3  with 168 revisions over 107 articles! Also very impressive!

     Most Articles Updated Award
Who has updated the most articles

Same names, different order for this award:

#1 Richard Mueller with 212 articles

    #2  with 107 articles

    #3  with 105 articles

     Most Updated Article Award
Largest amount of updated content in a single article

The article to have the most change this week was a new arrival, SharePoint 2013: İyi uygulamalar portalı (tr-TR), a Best Practices Portal by Gokan Ozcifci written in Turkish. A superb collection of links for anyone interested in SharePoint. no matter what your language.

     Longest Article Award
    Biggest article updated this week

This week's largest document to get some attention is T-SQL: FIFO Inventory Problem - Cost of Goods Sold by our beloved Naomi  N. This sensational article, albeit mostly code is an entry in July's TechNet Wiki Guru (TWIG) competition, our monthly awards for Technical content arriving on TNWiki. If you would like to join in the fun and gain love and recognition from the community, August's competition is now open for contributions.

     Most Revised Article Award
Article with the most revisions in a week

This week's most fiddled with article is BizTalk Server:  Webcasts and Videos by the one and only Sandro Pereira. Sandro made 28 revisions to this new article which he added this week. Nice to see so much work go into a fine piece of work. A fantastic collection of videos for people like me who prefer to watch than read.

     Smallest Significant Edit Award
Size isn't everything! Every edit counts.

Ignoring the addition of tags, this week's smallest but valuable tweak was to Wiki Ninja Belt Status: Green Belts by Naomi  N as she moved up belt ranks. Her tweak was a simple update to her status and links to these Top Contributor awards, as she progresses through the belts.

The Wiki Ninja Belts are a great way to progress your achievements through TechNet Wiki and the MSDN community as a whole, and are an indicator of your commitment to helping us grow and enlighten others. Congratulations Naomi for another pair of awards in this week's blog!

Congratulations to everyone for another strong performance, this week seeing the biggest number of updates I've seen to date, since I've been running the crawler!

    Best regards,
    Pete Laker

  • Part II: A true story about a Wiki Ninja and a little girl...

Hello and welcome to (y)our Sunday Lists!

Everybody knows how difficult it's to watch a little sister when there is no school. She wants attention, she wants food, she wants to play and many more. And yes she asks a lot of questions because she wants to learn.

Like a few monts ago she asked me a few questions and I tried to reply but again failed epically so she thinks I’m a little bit geek or crazy.

Here is my list of the top 3 conversation that I tried to have when she asked the fundamental question and my responds to my little sister only 7 years:

Little sister: I see everywhere the word GURU, what does it mean?

Answer Given: Guru is a Sanskrit term for "teacher" or "master", especially in Indian religions. The Hindu guru-shishya tradition is the oral tradition or religious doctrine or experiential wisdom transmitted from teacher to student. In the United States, the meaning of "guru" has been used to cover anyone who acquires followers, especially by exploiting their naiveté, due to the inflationary use of the term in new religious movements.

Real Answer should: A GURU is somebody like “Gandalf”. He knows a lot.

Conclusion: She is now scared and she broke my “Lord of the Rings” ^^

Little sister: Are “Yottun08” or “Horizon_Net” real names?

Answer Given: No sister, these are surnames. A surname is a name added to a given name and is part of a personal name. In many cases, a surname is a family name. Many dictionaries define "surname" as a synonym of "family name".

Real Answer should: Yes, this are their real names..

Conclusion: She now thinks that Tomoaki Yoshizawa is Yottun8 and Jan’s name is Horizon_Net and wants also a new “cool” name like “Azra_net08 – MSFT” ^^

Little sister: Are the WikiNinjas something like the Turtle Ninjas? Who is then Splinter (the bad guy?)

Answer Given: Euh we don’t have a bad guy sister in our team and the Turtle Ninjas are created in an American comic book published by Mirage Studios in 1984 in Dover, New Hampshire. The concept arose from a humorous drawing sketched out by Kevin Eastman during a casual evening of brainstorming with his friend Peter Laird.

Real Answer should:  Yes we are the same and we have a bad guy -> Ed Price

Conclusion: She thinks that Ed Price is the bad guy of the Wiki Ninjas ^^

Big hugs go to the TechNet Wiki community, keep up the contribution, have a great Sunday and don’t forget to tweet #TNWIKI and follow us @WikiNinjas!

SharePoint Ninja & and SharePoint Pirate,

    Gokan Ozcifci

  • Top Contributors Awards! Special Steef-Jan, Gokan & Sandro edition :D

First up, the weekly leader board snapshot...

Congrats to Gokan for a monster score.

Sandro and Steef-jan almost identical scores for second and third!!

As always, here are the results of another weekly crawl over the updated articles feed.

    Most Revisions Award
Who has made the most individual revisions

#1  with 637 revisions over 94 articles! WOW! Automation may be the key here? Surely a new record?

#2 Gokan Ozcifci with 471 revisions over 334 articles! incredible figures again this week!

#3  with 291 revisions over 67 articles. Nice solid performance again Sandro!

Who has updated the most articles

#1 Gokan Ozcifci with 334 articles!

    #2  with 94 articles!

    #3  with 67 articles!

    Most Updated Article Award
Largest amount of updated content in a single article

The article to have the most change this week was a new arrival - Windows Server 2012 Active Directory Auditing TR-tr by wiki regular Serhad MAKBULOĞLU. This is a nice article copied in from his own blog, and gratefully received. Note the watermarked images, no one allowed to nick em!

    Longest Article Award
    Biggest article updated this week

This week's largest document to get some attention is new arrival SharePoint 2013 Best Practices: Setting Up a Dev Environment - One Piece! by Gokan Ozcifci. This is an excellent step by step guide for setting up an SharePoint environment and adds to the excellent series by .

I'm afraid at this point my crawler buckled under the weight of changes by Steef-Jan, Gokan and Sandro, and time ran out to rerun it again, so I'll stop short this week, with just a few awards, but a whole lot of love.

Thank you to everyone for your amazing work yet again!

    Best regards,
    Pete Laker
