• Technology Tags - an idea and then a lot of contributions

Welcome to Thursday's Community Win, where we discuss a story of how the community has come together!

Although Horizon feature the article already (TNWiki Article Spotlight - Technology Tags), I wanted to tell the story.

Since the list of tags kept getting longer, there was no way to see all the tags. So if technology tags weren't popular enough, that made it impossible to find them in a list.

So I created this article on 12/14/12:

    TechNet Wiki: Technology Tags

I stubbed it out and planned to come back and work on it. But Luigi Bruno contributed the first tags the next day, and the article has taken off!

Now the article lists 123 different tags, added through 75 different edits, and the edits were described with 65 different comments!

So thanks to Luigi and other contributors!

  • TNWiki, Community, and being an MVP: a marathon run!

Currently I am in my third year in the MVP program. Still very focused on sharing my knowledge and experience with the community, interacting with the BizTalk Product Group and fellow Microsoft Integration MVP's. In my view is that the community, MVP's, MCC's and the Product Group need each other and should thrive for empowerment. This is what happens today and I am proud to be part of it. I welcome you to join in! In case you would have the ambition of becoming an MVP I would encourage you to read the TNWiki article How to Become an MVP or MCC by Ed Price. One of my favorite statements in this article is:

"The MVP  is a "marathon award", and not a sprint award. Because an MVP award is evaluated based on the previous 12 months of contributions, you have to be active and consistent for over a year."

For me the above means being active within the TechNet Wiki, TechNet Wiki Blog, my own blogs, public speaking and writing article's. These activities span the whole year, every year. My motivation is that sharing knowledge and experience gives me energy or a kick. I get the same kick from running. At the time you read this I have completed my first half marathon in The Hague. This run is a stepping stone for my first full marathon later this year in Berlin.

Running a marathon takes the same dedication and preparation compared to being an MVP, being involved in the community and the TechNet Wiki. Months of training are required to get to a stage where your body is ready for such a challenge. Contributing to TechNet Wiki and other media is similar. It takes dedication and drive. If the driver is becoming an MVP or MCC than it means you will have to be ready for a long run. Hence the analogy of running a marathon.

  • Week-end Surprise: Four Fantastic Presents the Microsoft Technical French Contributor

    Hello the community,

I’m very excited today to announce you a new collaboration between Ninjas.

But before talking about our new collaboration I want to highlight and give credentials to The Brazilian Ninjas. I got my MUG a few days ago and I’m very proud to use this MUG. Not because it has a beautiful logo or not because I can put 3 coffee a time.

It’s just amazing that a group Wiki Lovers (aka Luiz Henrique Lima Campos [MVP]) from 10.000 Miles of my house send me this gift. A big applause for them, for their amazing work and their attention to make the WIKI each day better.

A Few days ago Yagamoth555 was hunting, not on witches but on Microsoft Titles. You can check his article here: http://blogs.technet.com/b/wikininjas/archive/2013/03/03/weekend-hunt.aspx
and he founded something very interesant, the “Microsoft Technical Audience Contributor” who wasn’t an official affiliation to Microsoft.

I do not remember from where the idea was, or who sended the first mail but we the fantastic Four decided to create something like the Brazilian Community. Something like the MTAC.We decided to create the MTCF = Microsoft Technical French Contributor.

So what is this actually? Many of you are like me Moderators on TechNet Forums. The French community is actually doing something that any other Forum does. A little call for contribution.

This has been a sticky note on each Microsoft Product. You can check Florin Cuica’s post here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/1109/thread/5ffa7df3-62b9-4d53-939d-6e0ee4454641

We are going to take the winners of each platform and send them an email and say THANK YOU for contributing and you are now been nominated as a MTFC please update your Profile Name. He will also receive a little certification or Badge. A preview of the certification:

Updating his Profile Name is very important. This will awake the interest of other contributors and push them to contribute more. The Flow is as following:

    If you have any questions or remarks please don’t hesitate to take contact with me or;

    • Ed Price ( MSFT )
    • Philippe Levesque
    • Bruno Lewin ( MSFT )

    Thanks,

  • Weekend Hunt !

Hi everyone. Today I’am on the hunt ! (With my slingshot in my pocket and some beans – just kidding)

I just saw a new Microsoft’s title (new is subjective as it’s new for me).

    MTAC

I saw that title from profile (like here or here)

My curiosity started to kick in so I checked what it means. It means Microsoft Technical Audience Contributor. As a wiki contributor myself, I started to think that it could be related to the TNWiki. (To justify that point I found that almost everyone that use that title do contribute on the TNWiki)

My first step from there is to check Information on Profile Affiliations (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-US/gg602412.aspx)

No MTAC in the list. Now I search with my super binocular (don’t forget I’am on a hunt). So I open a search engine page and I start to search :)

The first page that interests me is from LinkedIn, it seem to have a group up there for MTAC.

Now I translate it over. It handled via a facebook’s group now !

    I digged a bit deeper I found that (machine’s translated); (http://www.fabiohara.com.br/2011/10/25/mtac-microsoft-technical-audience-contributor-perguntas-e-respostas/)

Now I know what it means and where it start ! That kind of lead is another example that the Brazil community is really strong on the TNWiki and they hold together.

Can that title be integrated with the wiki ninja’s belt system to bring that idea further ? Is it a title that was born before the wiki ninja’s title ? Don’t hesitate to comment for those questions !

Thanks everyone to have following my small hunt and I can just salute the Brazil’s community and Fabio Hara for such action !

     Most Updated Article Award
Largest amount of updated content in a single article

The article most updated this week is Project Server 2013 - Estratégias e Portfólio de Projetos by Hezequias Vasconcelos, a superb article, if I could read it :) I think it's Portuguese, but is missing any language tags.

Also worth noting is second place winner - Understanding Claim Rule Language in AD FS 2.0 by another excellent and original article we found a great read, thanks Joji.

     Longest Article Award
    Biggest article updated this week

The largest article to receive some attention this week is the beloved Outlook, Outlook for Mac, and Entourage Version and Features Comparison Chart by Henrik Walther.

This article was also recently featured on the homepage of TechNet wiki and for good reason. It's awesome!

     Most Revised Article Award
Article with the most revisions in a week

The article to receive the most revisions this week is Implementing Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) In SQL Server by JoeyDj with 19 revisions.

This is an interesting article about SQL data encryption. I learned a lot from this one when I found it from the crawler. A very useful article.

Joint first was Project Server 2013 - Estratégias e Portfólio de Projetos, by Hezequias Vasconcelos, mentioned above, also with 19 revisions

     Smallest Significant Edit Award
Size isn't everything! Every edit counts.

Ignoring the addition of tags, this week's smallest but valuable tweak was Glossario SharePoint (it-IT) by Luigi Bruno.

This is a faithful and professionally translated version of the wiki's famous SharePoint Glossary

Bruno's winning tweak? It's tiny, but valid. He removed the superfluous (en-us) tag on the link to the original article.

For this you win our "Attention To Detail Award" Bruno!

Thanks as always to all our wiki whittlers, for whittling away at our wonderful wiki.

Your efforts are always noticed and beloved. Many generations will benefit!

    Best regards,
    Pete Laker
