• Interview with a WikiNinja: Tim Macaulay

    Who are you?
    Tim Macaulay (Technet Profile)

    Where are you (from)?
    Charlotte, NC

    What do you do?
Support Escalation Engineer for Microsoft CTS Security Identity Team

Besides your work on the Wiki, where do you contribute? (Forums, blog?)
I place links to all of my wiki posts on our external team blog (blogs.msdn.com/ms-identity-support), and the TechNet Community Forums (Forefront Identity Manager 2010).

    What’s your favorite quote?
    Just do it!

    Why this quote?
Two reasons: (1) I like to accept a challenge head on! (2) If I spend five minutes griping, or finding a way out of something then I have wasted five minutes towards the resolution.

What are your specialty technologies? Name max 5.
Specialty is Forefront Identity Manager 2010.

Background in Windows Installer, Active Directory, and Development (C#, VB)

What do you do with TechNet Wiki ? (Hey, keep it short!)
Provide customer facing content on issues that we have encountered troubleshot and resolved within support. Provide troubleshooter wiki posts that provide information on how to troubleshoot specific issues and/or error messages.

How does your Wiki work fit into the rest of your job?
Allows me to share my knowledge with customers who do not call into support.

What is it about TechNet Wiki that interests you? Define it with a few key words.
The ability to deliver quick content to my customer base that does and does not call into support.

On what articles have you spend the most of your time?
I have spent a lot of time writing TechNet Wiki articles on the FIM Synchronization Service Engine and GalSync related issues.

What are your top 5 favorite articles?
Not sure I have a top 5 favorite. But ones that I refer to the most are:

    1. Resource Wiki Pages, like FIM Resources Page, GalSync Resources Wiki, PCNS-Password Synchronization Resource Wiki, SSPR Resource Wiki, Run Profiles Resource Wiki, FIM Landing Page )

    2. Troubleshooting stopped-dll-exception: connecting to remote server failed with the following error message: winrm cannot process the request

    3. Setting up GalSync to provision to Exchange 2010

    4. Setting up GalSync to provision to Exchange 2007

What are the top topics regarding Technet Wiki that need more attention & development?

    1. The Wiki editor. I find it frustrating sometimes to work in the wiki editor. It would be nice to be able to take a Microsoft Word Blog Post document and be able to publish the content from the word document.

    2. Statistics. I have not found an easy way to tell what pages are being viewed the most from the content published.

Who has impressed you in the Wiki community, and why?
Peter Geelen. His contributions, and information in the technology space I contribute.

What does success look like for TechNet Wiki?
I have had great success with TechNet Wiki. I would like to see it further evolve, and provide easier routes to publish data to the TechNet Wiki.

Technet Wiki is (highlight 1 on each line)

    1. Job / Fun

    2. Easy / hard to work with

    3. Sharing Experience / Passion

    4. Teaching / Learning

    5. Sharing / gathering knowledge

    6. Open / closed platform

    7. Personal / Community driven

    8. For newbies / specialists

    9. Quick win / long term investment

    10. Developer / ITPro

  • "Share" some "Point"s before "2013"

    Hello community,

As predicted by the Maya’s, yesterday was the end of the world, but today I’m living so I guess that they were wrong.

Before beginning I’d like to wish you ALL a merry Christmas!!

Today I’m going to explain how to learn, install and Configure Sharepoint Server 2013. This is my week-end surprise and you can use this as a reference to all kind of IT PRO who wants to use SharePoint Server 2013.

But therefore I’m honored to introduce you as a SharePoint Pirate,my friend Christmas Ninja

Before beginning to build your SharePoint environnement you have to know what is SharePoint, how-to build it, what means service applications, what you can do with SharePoint. Therefore you can read this wiki Page.

This is a set of training and videos (14 modules): http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/12483.sharepoint-2013-set-of-training-and-videos-14-modules.aspx

After watching all these videos you have to know what you need as requirement to build a SharePoint Platform. It’s a real heavy platform so you can’t install it on each hardware:

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/12410.sharepoint-2013-system-requirements-hardware-and-software.aspx

Each Software or Platform has his own Best Practices. And the person who can write the best “best practices” is Magriet Bruggeman. Check her post to see what practices you should you for your environnement. It’s a wonderful article.

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/12438.sharepoint-2013-best-practices.aspx

Now we are ready. Ready to install!! But you can’t directly install SharePoint Server; you have to install the prerequisits of SharePoint. If your Windows Server doesn’t have an Internet Connection you can install the prerequisits
manually and Craig wrote a really comprehensive guide to troubleshoot them.

    Prerequisits

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/14538.downloadinstall-sharepoint-2013-prerequisites-on-windows-server-2012-with-powershell.aspx

    Troubleshooting

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/14582.install-sharepoint-2013-prerequisites-offline-or-manually-on-windows-server-2012-a-comprehensive-guide.aspx

Great, now you can install SharePoint Server. Check the link to know how to install SharePoint Server 2013 on Windows Server 2012 With SQL Server 2012 written by myself:

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/12400.sharepoint-2013-install-sharepoint-2013-with-sql-2012-on-windows-server-2012.aspx

When your SharePoint Server 2013 is installed you can now configure services for your client. Here under a few examples of configuring services.

    Metadata Services:

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/12713.sharepoint-2013-how-to-configure-managed-metadata-service.aspx

    Access Services:

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/12514.sharepoint-2013-access-services.aspx

    Search Services:

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/12714.sharepoint-2013-how-to-configure-search-services-application-en-us.aspx

And the last but not the least do not forget to get your certificate on SharePoint Server. The certification will be out around February so it’s now or never to pass your certificate SharePoint 2010.

This is actually the flow that you should follow for your architecture..

Hope you like it.. Thanks for reading,

Big hugs go to the TechNet Wiki community, keep up the contribution, have a great sunday and don’t forget to tweet #TNWIKI and follow us @WikiNinjas!

  • Top Contributors - BizTalk, Active Directory Certificate Services, Virtualização (Virtualization), Fabric Monitoring (Cloud Services)

Here is the weekly analysis of contributions to TechNet Wiki over the last week (Fri-Sat)

Firstly, here is the usual weekly leader board snapshot:

Heroes one and all, I'm sure you'll agree.

Here are the usual awards, as a result of a two hour crawl through every change, from the updated articles feed...

    Most Revisions Award
Who has made the most individual revisions

Ed Price - MSFT sets the gold standard for wiki'ing, with an astronomical 271 revisions over 142 articles!!

Second place is Sandro Pereira with a great amount of work, no less than 61 revisions over just three articles! All wonderful resources worth highlighting this week:

At this point, my wiki crawler seems to have broken, as the results do not match a manual follow-up check, but I'd guess Kurt L Hudson is up there, as I see a great number of revisions from Kurt this week.

    Most Articles Updated Award
Who has updated the most articles

The winner this week is of course, the legendary Ed Price - MSFT, with 142 updated articles!!

For the second week running, second is held by Fernando Lugão Veltem, with 14 updated articles, half his previous week's total.

lovely tapan is up to third, just behind, with 12 updated articles.

    Most Updated Article Award
Largest amount of updated content in a single article

The largest change to a document this week was Step by Step Guide - Two Tier PKI Hierarchy Deployment, started only on Monday, by Nilesh  Patel.

This is a great document, detailing how to set up Active Directory® Certificate Services (AD CS) in a lab environment.

Most of the changes are by Kurt L Hudson who has worked hard to contribute some great content this week.

Another article to arrive with plenty of new goodness is System Center 2012 Scenario: Fabric Monitoring by Brian Wren

This is a great resource which "provides the basic configuration and steps necessary to implement fabric monitoring in a private cloud based on Microsoft Windows Server 2012 and Microsoft System Center 2012"

    Longest Article Award
    Biggest article updated this week

The biggest (longest) document to receive significant changes this week is as above, the Step by Step Guide - Two Tier PKI Hierarchy Deployment.

This is a truly awesome document that will no doubt enrich many people's lives, built up throughout the week, mostly by Kurt.

    Most Revised Article Award
Article with the most revisions in a week

The Article to receive the most revisions is again Step by Step Guide - Two Tier PKI Hierarchy Deployment.

Kurt's hard work building this up has been the real talking point of the week.

    Most Edited Article Award
    Article with most revisers

This award returns this week, because the Step by Step Guide - Two Tier PKI Hierarchy Deployment was also edited this week, as it grew, by five wiki ninjas:

Nilesh  Patel, Kurt L Hudson, Ed Price - MSFT, Richard Muellerlovely tapan

    Great to see such collaboration!

    Smallest Significant Edit Award
Size isn't everything! Every edit counts.

Ignoring the addition of tags, this week's smallest but valuable contribution was DIEGO RIERA

His addition was an extra link to the fantastic Brazilian Virtualization portal : Virtualização

Reiniciar todas as máquinas virtuais do host.

Keeping the portals up to date with new links is a very valuable contribution.

Congratulations to all wiki ninjas listed above. Your contributions are always noticed and appreciated.

Catch you next week with more high achievers!

    Best regards,
    Pete Laker

  • Community Win: Christmas Special

Hello and welcome everybody to our Thursday - Community Win.

So it's getting closer and closer to Christmas, it's celebrated all over the world, 24th or 25th or even later in Russia, however people are getting into the Christmas spirit.

I had a chat with Mandi (wonderful lady from Microsoft) and I asked her one simple question "Does Microsoft use our articles on the TechNet Wiki for references and to clients?"

You may know the answer, and of course it's yes. The community means both non-Microsoft employees and Microsoft employees. The content is getting more and more valuable for everyone. Whenever I need to find any information, I tend to end up on the TechNet Wiki; I'm pretty sure a lot of people do the same.

The wonderful thing about this is the win everyone gets, I'm into BizTalk, it's my passion, hobby and sometimes according to my wife my real wife ("Are you married to BizTalk or me", I said the only correct thing... of course it's my wife and not BizTalk).

So what I wanted to say is you all have contributed with your Christmas gifts to Microsoft and the Community. I would thank you all, you are making all the products a lot better, and bringing valuable content for me.

This is the biggest win anyone in the community can get this week. So for every new article you make this holiday, go ahead and add the tag "Christmas gift". After the holidays (January) I'll do a count, and the one with the most gifts will receive a very special gift! (Here's the "Christmas Gift" tag on TechNet Wiki Brazil.)
