I'm do not like the term, "culture debt." It puts a negative connotation on the word, culture, which is, in reality, neutral. I do however understand your point and it is valid. But making the word, culture, seem negative through the use of the term, culture debt, does not sit well with me. I strive to build a positive culture in the places that I work and, for me, the word, culture, is a positive term most of the time. A positive culture comes from people that have integrity, maturity, mutual goals and a great attitude that fosters collaboration, transparency and the putting the company goals first. A new term should be used in place of "culture debt" but I do not have one for you. How about "closed-mindedness and selfishness debt?"

@Wade. Thanks for sharing the thoughtful comments! I used the slightly negative phrase to express that this is something an organization has to overcome. You don't want to be in debt, you want to be in the positive.
Ideally the outcome of the transformation will be, like with technical debt, that debt is paid off or mostly paid off. This is the moment where the culture will turn to the positive where it should be. Regardless, you made a valid point.
A suggestion for a different term might be "organizational debt". Food for thought.

@Alan. Thanks for the comment. Could not agree more. We see many enterprise customers finding the benefits of working in a collaborative, very inclusive and cross-team fashion beneficial for the bottom line too. At the same time, I don't want to give the impression that DevOps is silver bullet for everything in IT.
