UPHClean v2.0 beta

So you want to try out the UPHClean v2.0 beta?  Very good because that is what this post is about!

The current beta build installs on Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. A future build will install on Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.

To get the full benefit of UPHClean you should set the registry value HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UPHClean\Parameters\SHARING_VIOLATION_REMAP to 1. This setting allows UPHClean to act on problems caused by application holding on to files after logoff. When this happens you may see profile folders left behind and/or creation of profile folders with names username.domain, username.000, username.001, etc.  Do this after installation is done.

Remember it is beta code.  Others who have tested it have reported crashes or hangs. It has been rare but keep that in mind when you decide what testing to do with it. UPHClean v2.0 will be released once the current build does not cause crashing/hanging. I will announce later beta bits through this blog.

The 32 bit plaform bits are here and for 64 bit platforms here.

I appreciate any feedback you have on this release.

# 1631?

Hi, thanks for the x64 update! Seems working fine on my Citrix machines.

But I have several 1631 errors like this: Access to z:\Documents and Settings\user\filename failed after updating the security descriptor of the file.

Could you tell us if it is an expected behaviour? Since it seems to me it is working correctly, profiles are locally removed.

Great comment about event 1631 -- I've created a blog post to explain what they mean and what to do about them.

# UPHClean (user profile hive clean) finally has a website on the internet.

Check out the site here to grab the new UPHClean 2.0 beta bits and learn more about the inner workings of the program. Anyone that has ever dealt with terminal services and/or Citrix has probably used this wonderful program on their Windows 2000/2003

# re: UPHClean v2.0 beta

Hi

We tested UPHClean 2.0 32bit but it was causing our servers to crash so we've had to abort.

I suspect it was a conflict with SAV which is causing our profiles to lock.

Robin - when will a non-crashing version be released?

Thanks

Nik

# Event ID 1631

The attributes on the file ntuser.pol causes UPHC to generate event 1631 because it cannot update the security descriptor of the file.  If you monitor "C:\Documents and Setttings\" with filemon, you will see that ntuser.pol is renamed to prf*.tmp during the profile synchronization process.

If you remove the attributes on the file with "attrib -r -h -s", the error is not written to the event long for 1 logon and logoff synchronization.
