To enable mark voicemail as private or protect the VM from being printed, forwarded, etc. it will require Active Directory Rights Management Services to protect the voicemails. You can also set it via UM Policy so you can only hear the VM via PlayOnPhone (no voice attachment or transcription).

You can either license AD RMS as standalone cal or as part of the Ecal suite.

Inbound FOIP (Fax over IP) has been deprecated in this release of UM. Most customers really wanted outbound faxing as well and that was only offered via 3rd party fax solutions which the majority of our customers used.

That being said, we do have integration hooks in Exchange UM 2010 to detect the fax tone and hand off the inbound fax to a 3rd party fax partner for inbound and outbound faxing with Exchange.

I would imagine the same fax vendors that work with Exchange 2007 are working on Exchange 2010. Your best bet would be to ping them directly.

We have used Captaris Right Fax which is now called OpenText.

It does support Excahgne 2007 SP1. I don't know about Exchange 2010.

It is extremely dissapointing to me that Microsoft is not going to support this natively. I was hoping to move off of the combined Avaya Modular Messaging/ right Fax combination for a clean Microsoft UM implementation. I may do UM/ Right fax now since (Finally) Microsoft natively supports the Message Waiting Indicator (MWI) light. But, that means I have to upgrade to 2010 and will probably have to upgrade to MM 5 before that as version 3 is going to be depricated soon. Why can't Microsoft deliver a simple solution and an update to UM for Exchange 2007 giving us MWI. Without that, I will probably have to wholly skip UM for MM.

The deprecation of inbound fax in exchange 2010 is *extremely* disappointing. Microsoft's comments that "most customers really wanted outbound faxing as well" are misleading, I think. I would guess most shops have a much greater need for inbound fax support rather than outbound. That said, so what if their stance is correct people DO want outbound fax support. Build it. Its just a print driver, essentially. But do NOT build a product that you tout as Unified Messaging and have inbound fax support in version 1 and then drop that support in version 2. Version 2 is now not UM, its less-than-UM.

When you say "Microsoft is misleading" please elaborate. The data the Exchange product team found showed around 5% of all Exchange UM customers use inbound fax and the number one reason cited for lack of adoption was either they already had a 3rd party Exchange fax solution or they wanted outbound faxing as well.

I don't have anymore insight into their decision process to deprecate the feature beyond that. I hope you understand every product team in any company has to weigh where to spend their development efforts such as critical feature needs (MWI, etc) vs radically expanding upon on low feature use features.

We currently use Cisco's unity voice mail system. Can we pass the voice mail attachment that Unity sends to an email recipient through the voice to text conversion in 2010?

Randy,

You have to have the Exchange UM server provide the transcription of the text. It can't transcribe existing audio attachments.

I have had a lot of Education customers moving away from Unity for Exchange to Exchange UM recently.

Voicemail in the cloud is supported with hosted but does this require co-existence with an internal Exchange server?

Hi Kathy,

No co-existence with internal mail servers are required. This is coming with the next release of Exchange Online (our hosted offering).
