wow- I know Microsoft get revenue from pre-installed operating systems on servers and PCs but the ammount of servers required is ncredible!

Tim,

It does appear to be quite a bit of servers however this is an enterprise scale reference so depending on the size of your business/school, availability requirements, and features needed your architecture may be only 4 servers for example (consolidated Edge, CWA, consolidated FE, SQL).

The other point that will help here is OCS R2 is supposed to be certified for virtualization several months post release of R2 so you can reduce the amount of physical servers.

R2 looks like a great step in the right direction. I really like how the roles can be combined. Hopefully you can share the same NICs and IP addresses.

Licensing has changed for OCS R2. With the introduction of new roles to simplify the cost only Front-end servers and Edge servers require a server license. We will be posting information on licensing on our site shortly.

For a scaled, consolidated edge deployment (two servers, load balanced), can you use OCS 2007 R2 Standard Edition?

I am trying to test R2 in a virtual environment with Hyper-V so I can have multiple roles running on same box. I can't get audio running in my VM under Hyper-V. Any thoughts?

Unfortunately we don't support virtualization with OCS R2 yet.

Thanks for keeping me accurate! I just updated blog to reflect the latest R2 released documents. I originally based this off of pre-released R2 architecture documents in December and some of the R2 final document charts have changed. The collocation table being the biggest change.

Can we install OCS inside a VM? I am confused because inside VM, Exchange Server does not support UM role.

Yes, for certain OCS roles you can virtualize them as we announced it last week.

Can the Front End Role and Mediation server role be collocated for a standard edition deployment of R2?

Do you need 64 bit hardware with 64 bit OS as well?

Adapt,

Mediation cannot be collocated with any other role with Std or Enterprise edition.

64-bit HW and OS required for Std or Enterprise edition.

Hi Mark,

Do you happen to have the Visio's available for download/email from this post? Or even the stencils? I haven't been able to find R2-specific stencils (like Group Chat server for example), and thought I would ask before I went ahead and created something.

Can i have a single IP address for Edge server with different port defined for AV, SIP and Webconferencing.

Hi Thomas,

You need a unique IP per Edge role but it can be on a single NIC.
