Notification of revised WSUSScn2.cab released on 08/17/2009

On Monday the WU/MU team released a revised WSUSSCN2.CAB file. This new cab file addresses reported issues with last Tuesday’s release of the security bulletin MS09-037 being over-offered on x64 platform systems. No systems are left un-secure as a result of this problem but the updated CAB file corrects the reporting and offering errors. We recommend that .cab users download and run this newer version of the .cab file.

Microsoft Extends Support for SMS 2003

Support for Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 and Systems Management Server 2003 R2 will transition from Mainstream Support to Extended Support on January 12, 2010. This update follows the Microsoft Support Lifecycle policy for Business and Developer products. The Microsoft policy provides a minimum of five years of Mainstream Support or two years of Mainstream Support after the successor product ships, whichever is longer. Organizations that are currently running Systems Management Server 2003 should note the dates when Mainstream Support and Extended Support end. Customers who are interested in migrating to System Center Configuration Server 2007 can contact a Sales Account Manager or a Technical Account Manager.

Support for ACT 5.5 with the ACT Connector

Microsoft released a new version of ACT, version 5.5. This version changed the database schema which prevents configuring the ACT database from the ACT Connector administrator console. If you upgrade an existing ACT installation to 5.5 which has already been configured in the ACT connector, no additional steps are required. Using this documented workaround ACT 5.5 is supported by Microsoft with the System Center Configuration Manager 2007 ACT Connector.

Now released to Connect, this guide leads the administrator through the process of planning a Configuration Manager infrastructure. The guide addresses the following fundamental decisions and tasks: identifying which Configuration Manager features will be needed; designing the components, layout, security, and connectivity of the Configuration Manager infrastructure. Following this guide will result in a design that is sized, configured, and appropriately placed to deliver the stated business benefits, while considering the user experience, security, manageability, performance, capacity, and fault tolerance of the system.

.NET Framework 3.5 SP1 is now supported on Configuration Manager 2007 RTM and SP1

The .NET Framework 2.0 is a dependency for the Admin Console and the Desired Configuration Manager (DCM) feature of the client. Typically the .NET Framework is a side-by-side (SxS) installation so compatibility is not a concern. However, the .NET Framework 3.5 install performs an upgrade to the .NET Framework 2.0 and .NET Framework 3.0 behind the scenes, this is now fully supported.

Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V is now supported for Configuration Manager 2007 RTM and SP1

Support will be provided for client management, site server roles, and the administrator console running within a Hyper-V environment. There are no hotfixes required for the release to support configuration scenario. This applies to customers running Windows Server 2008 with Hyper-V RTM installed.

System Center Configuration Manager platform support update

System Center Configuration Manager 2007 (RTM and SP1) now supports the use of SQL Server 2008 as a site database. In order to upgrade a site-server database to SQL 2008 there are 2 hot fixes required:

· ConfigMgr 2007 RTM customers must apply hot fix KB955229

· ConfigMgr 2007 SP1 customers must apply hot fix KB955262

The following are requirements when performing a clean install on a SQL Server 2008 database:

· A clean install of ConfigMgr 2007 RTM on a SQL Server 2008 database is not supported. You must first install SQL Server 2005, upgrade to SQL Server 2008 and then apply hot fix KB955229

· A clean install of ConfigMgr 2007 SP1 on a SQL Server 2008 database is supported, but should apply hot fix KB955262

System Center Configuration Manager R2 Availability

With the release of Configuration Manager R2, customers with an SA gain access to some incredibly powerful capabilities. To date this is the strongest release of Configuration Manager, with platform support now for Vista SP1, Windows Server 2008, as well as a collection of new capabilities. Application Virtualization, SQL Reporting Services, Client Status Reporting and Forefront Client Reporting all are now available to SA customers. Configuration Manager R2 RTM'd (Release to Manfacturing) on August 28th, with evaluation bits and content releasing to the public. As with other System Center (and Microsoft) releases, this is not the date that the product is widely available. We use this RTM date as an announcement for when Engineering has signed off the quality of the product as acceptable for release to the public.
