About Me, About This Blog

A studied publicity photoHi, I'm Tristan Kington, I work as [Sep 2004] an Support Professional Escalation Engineer in the Sydney Global Technical Support Centre (GTSC) in the Windows Platform [2006] Internet and EBiz support team. Up until Recently, I've mainly focused on Windows Networking and ISA Server. I've worked in the GTSC for about three years now since 2001.

I have been gainfully employed in the support of Microsoft technologies since 1995 across a fairly wide range of products, both in Microsoft support roles and out in The Industry. Most recently I was a Windows server admin at an Australian telco.

I'm also what I'd call an amateur eclectic developer - I tend to get very excited about technologies, learn them to the point where I'm comfortable using them, and then move onto something else. Wide, rather than deep. I tend to obtain knowledge piecemeal, so I'm frequently wrong about things I only half-understand. Sorry about that, in advance.

I don't have a lot of interests that don't involve computers. I'm one of those people that got into technology by playing computer games, a habit I retain to this day. Most of my free time is spent either playing (PC or Xbox) games or eating, or working from home! (Now imagine someone that only works, plays computer games, or eats, and you've a pretty good mental image of me...)

My thinking was originally:

this blog will act as a public repository of things I've found that either aren't documented elsewhere, or are but I couldn't find them easily by a quickish web search. I tend to scribble notes in OneNote, and - just occasionally - there's a really useful item that might not make the best KB article, but that might improve the quality of the infosphere by being out there. I like blogs where the technical content is pretty high, and the personal content relatively low, so that's the model I'm mentally geared to, just don't hold me to it!

And I'll keep that recorded here for posterity, but these days I think the personal angle is all that stops a blog from being a corporate mouthpiece. That and the quality of the stock images...

I'm also freakishly erratic and a caffeine fiend, so I apologize if you catch me in my Bad Part Of The Day (before 6pm).

This blog was originally called Extra Bits That Didn't Fit, but I got less pretentious as the years wore on, and wanted to consider the use that moniker for something else. Yes, I'd say the use of "moniker" is also pretentious. I'm just evil.
