You asked for it, you got it: .chm builds of library content

A frequent request from customers and partners is to create a download that contains all of the content from our technical library in compiled help format (CHM). Well, it took a while, but due to some positive changes in our authoring environment, we can now build .chm files of our content. Now live and available for your downloading and searching pleasure: Office SharePoint Server 2007 Technical Library in Compiled Help format.

We'll refresh monthly, and post the updates on our newly published content list, so check back and grab the hot, fresh content regularly. If you like this one, we'll do one for Windows SharePoint Services too.

Thanks for your feedback.

Just FYI, I tried opening the file on my Vista SP1 machine, and every page in the help file has been giving me a "The address is not valid" error. It'd be a great resource, but it doesn't seem to work for me. Any suggestions?

Hi - thanks for trying it out! The error you received is a known issue with CHM downloads. To get the file to open correctly, save it locally (don't open it directly), and then when you double-click the file to open it, be sure you clear the "Always ask before opening this file" check box. For more information, see the "Instructions" section on the download page.

Hi!

You say you changed your authoring environment. I'm curious. What authoring environment do you folks use their at MS? Do you use a component content management system, or is documentation still produced as entire "documents," that is, in order to re-use content from one document in another you must copy & paste?

Sharepoint is a document management application, but how do you actually compose the documents?

Thanks!

Jason

We use a proprietary authoring system developed in house.

Hello, all. I'm a tech editor on the IT Pro team, and we were wondering if an index would be useful in such .chm files.

When .chm files will be updated to the actual technical library content? It will not be monthly?
