Most of the current desktop recovery tools return a system to a known good state by mirroring the deployment process.

In the September issue of TechNet Magazine, Wes Miller shows you how to build your own recovery solution based on Windows PE. Using Windows PE, an imaging utility such as ImageX, some scripting -- and optionally SQL Server and Active Directory -- you can build a simple but flexible recovery solution tailored specifically to your organization's needs.

Don't forget to check out Wes's sidebar on creating a recovery partition while leaving Windows intact.
