Devices Just Work, Mobile Broadband

If you have an AT&T Globetrotter device (Option Icon 322) which is not working on Windows 7, please see below:
Problem #1 - After installing the connection manager from the device, unable to use the device/connection manager to connect to the network after reboot.
This issue gets resolved using the latest AT&T CM 6.10. You can download the latest ACM from http://www.wireless.att.com/businesscenter/en_US/download/Setup-ACM-6.10.exe.
Problem #2 - Unable to connect using the RAS dialup connection "3G connection" in both Win7 from VANUI and Vista SP1.
The dialup number in the "3G connection" profile is "ppp". By modifying the dialup number in the "3G connection" profile to *99#, you should be able to successfully establish a connection and browse the internet. Please follow the below procedure to change the dialup number of "3G connection" profile through the VAN (View All Networks) UI:
- Left click on the Network icon in the Task Bar to bring up VAN UI.
- Right click on the "3G connection" profile and select Properties. (3G connection is created by the AT&T CM after installing it from the device)
- Modify the Phone number value from ppp to *99# and press OK.
Now you can connect by dialing this connection.

When you try connecting to the internet using your mobile broadband device, do you see error 680 or an error that there is no dial tone?
Then, the below post may help you to identify the issue and get the connection working
This may happen if you have more than one modem configured on the computer. Some computers come with a in built modem and after plugging in the mobile broadband device, there might be two modems. And the connection manager might configure a dial-up connection which uses the wrong modem. So the connection might actually be trying to use the in-built modem when you want it use the device.
How to verify if this is the issue?
You will need to verify if the dial-up connection that your ISV’s connection manager creates is using the wrong modem. Steps to track this are below:
- netsh ras set tracing * disable
- del %windir%\tracing\*.*
- netsh ras set tracing * enable
- Dial your connection using the connection manager/dialer application
- netsh ras set tracing * disable
- Open %windir%\tracing\RASMAN.log and search for "ProtocolStart: EntryName:”. Note the entry name here.
- Open the network connections folder. Start –> Control Panel –> Network and Sharing Center –> Click on ‘Change adapter settings’ in the left pane.
- You will see the connection whose name was present in the log file here.
- Rightclick on the connection –> Properties –> Go to the ‘General’ tab
- Check if the modem selected here is the correct one. If not correct it.
- Dial this connection from here –> Rightclick –> Connect and verify that it connects

You must have read the following post on this blog about issues with Sierra Wireless AC 875 device.
http://blogs.technet.com/teammb/archive/2009/03/17/my-sierra-wireless-ac875-with-at-t-connection-manager-is-not-working.aspx
However, there is one issue that you might see with any of the devices mentioned below in this post, only on 64-bit Windows 7 builds, that use ATT connection manager. After you install the package, your drivers would be installed.
However, all the USB ports might stop working.
If you are experiencing this, then perform the following steps to workaround this:
- Note the install location on the computer where the drivers were installed from the CD
- You need to be an administrator on the machine
- del %systemdrive%\windows\syswow64\drivers\swmsflt.sys
- del %systemdrive%\windows\system32\swmsflt.sys
- Search for swmsflt64.sys in the install location (dir /s swmsflt64.sys) and note the location
- Copy swmsflt64.sys from the above location in step (4) to %systemdrive%\windows\system32\drivers\
- Rename swmsflt64.sys to swmsflt.sys in %systemdrive%\windows\system32\drivers\
- Reboot the machine
Devices that have this issue:
[Note: These devices will have this issue only if they come with the ATT connection manager. If they come with a different connection manager, you might not hit this issue.]
- Sierra Wireless USB Connect Mercury
- Sierra Wireless USB Connect Quicksilver
- Sierra 881 PC Card
- Sierra 875 PC Card
- Sierra Wireless AC875U

Or Manually need to install the drivers for my HP Embedded Mobile Broadband device.
This applies to both HP hs2300 Broadband Wireless Module or HP ev2210 1xEV-DO Rel. A Wireless Broadband Module.
- Go to HP site and download the package - http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-65526-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=sg&product=3641274&os=2093&lang=en.
- Run the executable and extract it to a local folder.
- From the same local folder, run setup.exe
- Follow on-screen direction to complete the setup.
- After completing the setup, go to C:\Program Files\HPQ\Shared\Sierra Wireless\Driver Installer.
For x86 platform:-
- Right-Click DriverInstaller.exe and click Properties.
- Go to Compatibility tab and check the "Run the program in compatibility mode for" and select "Windows Vista" from the combo.
- Select OK
- Run the DriverInstaller.exe and it will install the drivers.
For 64-Bit platform:-
- Right-Click DriverInstaller64.exe and click Properties.
- Go to Compatibility tab and check the "Run the program in compatibility mode for" and select "Windows Vista" from the combo.
- Select OK
- Run the DriverInstaller64.exe and it will install the drivers.

If you use the VAIO Smart Network utility without installing the DLLs/Shared Libraries from Sony, you will hit this. This utility, which is used to control the WWAN device, can only be used if you install the pre-requisite libraries and DLLs. The solution is to ensure that these libraried/DLLs are pre-installed before installing/using the VAIO Smart Network utility.
For the same, (VGN-TZ21VN/X or VGN-TZ class models) you can use the following simple step-by-step procedure:-
- Download the Sony Utilities Package by going to the following location - http://support.vaio.sony.co.uk/downloads/info/info.asp?site=voe_en_GB_cons&url=Vaio/Original/TZ21_Utilities.zip&ip=Preinstalled_Utilities.htm.
- Accept the License Agreement
- Accept the download and save the file to a local folder (about 150 MB)
- Extract the ZIP file
- Go to Utils Installer 1 SonyUtils DLL folder
- Run the setup.exe and follow the on-screen instructions.
- After completing the above setup, go to Utils Installer 2 Sony Shared Library folder
- Run the setup.exe and follow the on-screen instructions.
- After completing the above setup, go to Utils Installer VAIO Control Center folder
- Run the setup.exe and follow the on-screen instructions.
- The above steps would install the pre-requisites to install the VAIO Smart Network utility.
- Now download the VAIO Smart Network Utility:-
- Go to http://support.vaio.sony.co.uk/downloads/info/info.asp?site=voe_en_GB_cons&url=VAIO/Updates/EP0000165709.exe&ip=EP0000165709.htm
- Accept the License Agreement
- Accept the download and save the file to a local folder (about 5 MB)
- Now you can use VAIO Smart Network Utility to switch on/off the WWAN device. You can now install the device driver and corresponding connection manager to use the device.
-
The driver shows error in device manager using the default ATT connection manager drivers in ACM-6.10.
The 32 bit USB filter driver may be getting copied instead of 64-bit by the AT&T CM. Please use the following workaround:-
- You need to be an admin on the machine.
- Delete the file %systemdrive%\windows\syswow64\drivers\swmsflt.sys
- Copy the file %systemdrive%\program files(x86)\sierra wireless\tru-install\drivers\swmsflt64.sys to directory %systemdrive%\windows\system32\drivers and rename the file swmsflt64.sys to swmsflt.sys.
- Reboot the machine.
-
SmartWi application is used to control the built-in WWAN adapter.
In order for SmartWi to work, you need to install all of the utilities/DLLs under the following folder in the eSupport page for a particular model (For example, refer to URL link below):
- Notebook Control and Utilities (1 file)
- System Components (3 files)
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=VGNSZ670N

or my device is listed as a yellow bang in the device manager.
The following workaround can be applied to unblock users with embedded HP modules:
- Download and install the legacy HP driver installer package http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-65526-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=sg&product=3641274&os=2093&lang=en.
- The installation will fail to install the drivers but the drivers will be copied to C:\Program Files\HPQ\Shared\Sierra Wireless\Driver Installer\Drivers\WinVista\32bit. (or D:\Program Files\HPQ\Shared\Sierra Wireless\Driver Installer\Drivers\WinVista\64bit for 64-Bit).
- You would need to manually install the driver from Device Manager by pointing to the folder mentioned above. This means that you would have to go to the Device Manager, uninstall the old driver and then update to the new one by pointing to the folder location mentioned above.
- Right after that a bunch of new devices will jump out. Each one of them has to be again manually updated using the same location.
If you still face issues, please let us know.

...Then you should read this post!
I realize that many of you might be having teething issues with using your USB modem or the data card from your ISV on Windows 7, though they worked perfectly in Windows Vista. This can be due to a lot of reasons - a driver compatible with Windows 7 might not be available, the connection manager application might have application compatibility issues etc. However, most of these issues would get solved soon.
However, here are a few troubleshooting steps/workarounds that you could put to use to continue enjoying internet access on Windows 7. If you still have an issue which you couldn't solve using these tips, do post the issue as a comment on this blog, so that it can be made note of.
Symptom:1: There is an application that works fine on XP, but has issues in Vista & Windows 7
Possible workaround:
One of the reasons could be privilege issue. You can modify the compatibility settings for the application to enable it to run in Administrator mode and then run it. Steps to do this are as below:
- Right click on the application in explorer. Click on Properties.
- Navigate to the 'Compatibility' tab. Check the checkbox 'Run this program as an administrator' under 'Privilege level'.
- Click on OK.
Symptom:2: You have a driver package/connection manager installer package which worked on Vista but isn't working for Windows 7
Possible workaround:
In such a case, you could try running your installer/application in Vista compatibility mode. See below for steps to enable 'Vista compatibility' settings on an application so that when you run it, it is launched in Vista compatibility mode.
- Right click on the application in explorer. Click on Properties.
- Navigate to the 'Compatibility' tab. Check the checkbox 'Run this program in compatibility mode for:'.
- Select 'Windows Vista (Service Pack 1)' or 'Windows Vista (Service Pack 2)' from the drop down as shown below, depending on which OS it worked well for you. Click on OK.
Symptom:3: The drivers for the device installed successfully, but the 'Connect' button is disabled in the connection manager or the connection manager/dialer application reports that the device is not found.
Possible workaround:
You could check if the drivers for your device are successfully installed. Open device manager (Start -> Control Panel -> Device Manager). Check if your device is recognized here ie. there is no yellow bang on the device and device manager reports it to be working properly.
If this is the case, but the connection manager/dialer application reports that the device is not found (or connect button is grayed out), then you can create a dial-up connection manually using the modem and use it for connecting to the internet.
For this we need to first get the phone number, username and password details to use in the connection. Use one of the below methods to get this information:
1) Get it from the RAS tracing logs collected when dialing using your ISV's application
(i) netsh ras set tracing * disable
(ii) del %windir%\tracing\*.*
(iii) netsh ras set tracing * enable
(iv) Dial your connection using the connection manager/dialer application
(v) netsh ras set tracing * disable
(vI) Open %windir%\tracing\RASMAN.log and search for "UserName:" and "PhoneNum:" (The password is usually the same as the username or empty. the password isn't present in the logs for security reasons)
2) You could get these settings from the Connection Manager Advanced settings/Options too.
3) The device manual might have this information too.
Once you have this information, you need to create a new dialup connection using your modem.
Steps to create a dial- up connection
1) Start -> Control Panel -> Open 'Network and Sharing Center'
2) Click on 'Set up a new connection or network' -> 'Set up a dial up connection' -> Next --> Enter the phone number, username /password details.
Enter a connection name, say 'ModemDialup'
(If you have more than one modem attached to the device, be sure to select the right one)
3) Click on 'Connect'
You can access this connection by clicking on the Network icon in the taskbar at the bottom right (highlighted below).
You will find 'ModemDialup' connection here. You can use this to connect/disconnect your connection.
Symptom:4: Even after installing drivers from the CD, the device is still not recognized in device manager
Possible workaround:
In spite of installing the drivers from the CD that accompanied the device, lets say the device still shows a yellow bang in device manager.
- In this case, note the folder where the drivers were installed, say it is C:\Program Files\FooDriver.
- Open device manager (Start -> Control Panel -> Device Manager)
- Right click on the device (which is still showing a yellow bang) -> click on 'Update driver software'
- Select 'Browse my computer for driver software' -> In the text box 'Search for driver software in this location:' , type the install location on your computer where the drivers were installed from the CD. In our example it would be C:\Program Files\FooDriver. Click on 'Next'
This might sometimes help in recognizing the device successfully.
Symptom:5: USB ports on the computer might stop working after installing drivers for certain devices on Windows 7
Possible workaround:
For certain devices after installing the drivers from the accompanying CD, all USB ports on the computer stop working. To get the USB ports working, use the below steps:
- Note the install location on the computer where the drivers were installed from the CD
- del %systemdrive%\windows\syswow64\drivers\swmsflt.sys
- del %systemdrive%\windows\system32\swmsflt.sys
- Search for swmsflt64.sys in the install location (dir /s swmsflt64.sys) and note the location
- Copy swmsflt64.sys from the above location in step (4) to %systemdrive%\windows\system32\drivers\
- Rename swmsflt64.sys to swmsflt.sys in %systemdrive%\windows\system32\drivers\
- Reboot the machine
These are the symptoms and troubleshooting tips that I have for now. If you have figured out a workaround that isn't here, do leave your comments explaining the workaround. It might help hundreds of people out there!
