UPDATE: This particular promotion is over, but we currently have another promotion going on through March 31, 2010: TNITE04 Whenever I present a live TechNet Event , I ask my audience to raise their hands if they are a TechNet subscriber . Usually about 1/3 of the audience raises their hand. Considering that this is typically a Microsoft-friendly audience, I'm a little shocked that there aren't more hands going up. The TechNet Subscription is such a great resource for IT Pros, for these reasons:

RTM = Released to Manufacturing At 1:40pm Pacific (Redmond) time, the party started around the world, as both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 finally ship; that is to say, they are “RTM’d”. The bits are ready. They’ll be sent to OEMs, then made available to partners, businesses, TechNet and MSDN subscribers, and finally throughout the world. Congratulations to the product teams and to all of the many people who tested it, reported issues, and helped Microsoft make these into such amazing products.

A few minutes ago I got an e-mail from Steve Balmer. Microsoft today announced the new name and new functionality of the new search engine. The new name is the sound I suppose I should hear when I find what I’m looking for. But I can’t help but thinking of old Christmas TV Specials with a large family drinking Florida Orange Juice and singing “White Christmas”. I won’t outline the new features here, because I haven’t yet investigated them myself (to be honest. Actually, I’ve been using “Kumo” (the

RCs = Release Candidates RTW = Released to Web “for some” means “for TechNet and MSDN subscribers” You remember several days ago we announced that the RC for Windows 7 would be available to TechNet and MSDN subscribers on April 30th . “Hey, that’s today!” Yep. And of course the first thing I did this morning was to connect up to TechNet and see if the software was there. It is! Not only Windows 7 , but we also have released Windows Server 2008 R2 Release Candidate today as well. My download is progressing.

Breaking news: The browser that you are using right now is quite possibly out of date. Today Microsoft released the new version of the Internet Explorer browser. Internet Explorer 8 , or “IE8”. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/default.aspx It’s fast . It’s cool . It’s easier to develop for (standards, baby!). And it’s available HERE . For details from the team who brought it to you, check out their blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2009/03/19/internet-explorer-8-final-available-now.asp

Breaking News: The IT Manager Community Hub is LIVE! Spread the word! For several months now, I’ve been working with people in the Microsoft BMO on this project, which started because of a recognition that IT Managers – people who lead IT people and run IT organizations – haven’t been served as well as they could be from Microsoft. We’ve heard you loud and clear! If you’re an IT Manager, or even if you’re simply looking for a good starting place for answers to questions such as: “How do I start

Hi! Below are the best of the questions and answers that occurred during our TechNet Webcast entitled, " SharePoint Server 2007 (Part 3 of 6): Disaster Recovery " John Weston was kind enough to help out with the questions and answers during the webcast. Much of what you see below is either specifically his answer, or based on the answer he gave during the session. I've expanded upon them, and added answers to questions we didn't get to answer or were answered verbally on the

Hi! Below are the best of the questions and answers that occurred during our TechNet Webcast entitled, "SharePoint Server 2007 (Part 1 of 6): Planning and Deploying SharePoint Server 2007" John Weston was kind enough to help out with the questions and answers during the webcast. Much of what you see below is either specifically his answer, or based on the answer he gave during the session. I've expanded upon them some - but basically this was possible as a result of his effort, and I wanted to give

Today Microsoft released a new Search offering - Search Server 2008 Express . This is on top of the recently announced Search Server 2008 , and of course Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 . "Express? Does this mean, like in so many other products with that moniker, that this is free?" Yep. Free. "So.. it's scaled down, I bet. Probably some limit on the number of items you can index, right?" Wrong. From what I've read, it's pretty much
