  • On the ISA Server Security Update

Rambling my way to a point One of my most favourite “Favorites” (read: “he snarled”) in recent weeks has been the ISA Server Product Team’s Build Numbers post . They helpfully list the version numbers of each ISA Server, um, version, along with a link to the most recent hotfix for that version. That’s so helpful . But: In most cases, you had to use the self-service hotfix feature to get that hotfix. Which is better than calling someone, but still not quite one-click conweenyence. And there was some

  • Antivirus software on ISA Server

There are two major classes of Anti Virus software (yes, I know I used one word above, it’s called SEO, okay?) that can be used on an ISA Server computer: ISA-integrated antivirus scanning products Regular desktop/server antivirus products The first category is the cooler of the two, and typically involves a Web Filter and/or an Application Filter. It’s been designed to work with ISA Server, and will likely scan HTTP streams while ISA is processing them. The second category is more common – a desktop

  • Getting an error when trying to connect to a VM using the Virtual Machine Connection tool

If you are trying to connect to a Virtual Machine using VMConnect.exe (a Hyper-V tool), you might get an error that says "An error occured when trying to register for IME events for ....." and it indicates that an Access Denied has occured. If this happens, it is possible that the cause is DCOM configuration. Open DCOMCNFG, click on my computer, properties, COM security, click on Access Permissions limits, and make sure that Anonymous Logon has Remote Access enabled.

  • MS08-067: Worms, Worms, Worms

Over the last couple of weeks, there has been an uptick in the number of different malware programs aimed at exploiting the vulnerability patched in MS08-067 .  If you’ve been monitoring the various security websites and blogs, then you’ve probably already seen information on malware such as Worm:Win32/Conficker.A and Backdoor:Win32/IRCbot.BH .  The major AV software packages are configured to detect this malware, so if you’ve already patched your systems with MS08-067 and your AV software

  • Highly Available Virtual Networks and VMM

We had a few customers ask us to clarify high availability (HA) with regards to Virtual Networks (VN). In the VMM/Clustering case, there are a few considerations around virtual networks: A VN to be considered HA has to have the same exact name in all nodes of the cluster (Virtual Network names are case-sensitive), the same location (the NICs to which the VN is attached to in each cluster node have the same location) and the same VN network tag An HA VM in a cluster connected to a VN not marked as

  • What does it mean when there's no "broken page" icon in IE8?

I was just catching up on some of my RSS feeds, and noticed that one of the pages I was at didn't have a broken page icon, but wasn't working quite right (some broken javascript in the photos area, I'm guessing... I'll investigate that next). I wondered what that meant, so fired up Fiddler2 to have a look. The Headers collection didn't include the compatibility header (X-UA-Compatible: IE=EmulateIE7 or similar): HTTP/1.1 200 OK Proxy-Connection: Keep-Alive Connection: Keep-Alive Content-Length: 77144

  • Two Minute Drill: Troubleshooting Name Resolution

Welcome back AskPerf readers!  For our readers in the United States, I hope you enjoyed your three day weekend for the Labor Day holiday, but it’s time to get back to work.  I know today’s title looks like it should be posted on one of our Networking blogs, but we see a few issues with name resolution over on the Performance team – especially when the problem relates to applications not functioning as expected.  So let’s dive right in … When troubleshooting name resolution problems

  • What Port is that Service using?

We deal with application and service issues on a daily basis.  Normally the problems relate to applications not performing as expected, hanging or crashing.  However, every so often someone will ask us what network port a service is using.  Unless we are talking about one of the well known services such as SMTP, FTP, HTTP, RDP, LDAP, basic RPC etc, the ports being used are potentially subject to change.  That does make life a little more challenging – but it’s nothing that we

  • Hyper-V Constrained Delegation of Authority —

Hyper-V, Virtual Server 2005

  • Network Monitor 3.1 OneClick … now what?

Hello again AskPerf!  This is Austin.  In my last post, we discussed how to get a network trace using OneClick.  Today, I’m going to show you how you might use that data.  The example I am going to use is for a file server that is acting sluggish and show you how two registry values might alleviate some of your issues.  Don’t worry, we’re not going to start another chorus of “Get Rid of those .PST Files” – we’re going to assume that you’re in a .PST-free zone today!

Hello AskPerf readers!  My name is Austin and I am a Technical Lead on the Performance team.  In several of our posts, we’ve discussed troubleshooting server performance issues, especially on file servers.  Most of you have probably already read our post on Network .PST files , or Windows Explorer and SMB Traffic .  We have seen an increase in file server load issue that go beyond some of the obvious issues such as Network .PST files, misbehaving filter drivers, or pool memory

  • That Memory Leak Revisited

While searching for memory leaking troubleshooting techniques that could be applied to 64-bit Windows (for the DHCP Server memory leak I found I had the other day ), I stumbled across the answer to my problem in an internal tool (weird that I missed it from a web search the first time, but c'est la vie). A Windows Server 2008-based DHCP server that is configured in a workgroup environment may consume too much memory http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/949530   And that's my problem!
