  • Introduction to the Fix My Network Wizard (FNCW)

    [Today's post comes to us courtesy of Shawn Sullivan] In SBS 2003, the CEICW was available to administrators for configuring their firewall, Internet connection, self-signed certificate, and email settings from a single wizard. Re-running the CEICW was a common troubleshooting step in fixing network related problems. However, SBS 2008 has taken the concept of the CEICW and broken it down into several specific wizards in place of one monolithic wizard. Administrators can now address more specific

  • How Do I Distribute the SBS 2008 Self-Signed SSL Certificate to My Users?

      [Today's post comes to us courtesy of Shawn Sullivan and Rituraj Choudhary] Today’s post discusses the certificate distribution package on SBS 2008. The SBS 2008 self-signed SSL certificate that is installed in IIS 7 is a leaf certificate; meaning that the Issued to and Issued by names are not the same. Unlike SBS 2003, Certificate Services is installed as part of setup and a root Certificate Authority (CA) certificate is created to validate the server. If a client machine or mobile

  • Introducing the “Add a Trusted Certificate Wizard” in SBS 2008

    [Today's post comes to us courtesy of Shawn Sullivan] The purpose of the “Add a trusted certificate wizard” is to simplify the process of requesting and obtaining a trusted 3 rd party SSL certificate for the SBS Web Applications website in IIS 7. This eliminates the need to use the native IIS 7 interface, which is more complicated and time consuming. However, this wizard only works with the SBS Web Application site. It does not submit or process certificate requests for any other website;

  • Introducing the Connect to the Internet Wizard (CTIW)

    [Today's post comes to us courtesy of Shawn Sullivan] Networking has changed significantly in requirements, setup, and configuration on SBS 2008. This blog post introduces one of the major networking wizards and gives some insight on how setup handles networking. The job of the CTIW is to detect a third party firewall device or ISA server and an existing DHCP server, while trying to gather information about the current network settings so it can properly configure the server to communicate with the

  • SBS 2008: Supported Networking Topology

    [Today's post comes to us courtesy of Justin Crosby and Wayne McIntyre] Networking in SBS 2008 has been simplified down to one supported network topology. Today’s post will discuss this topology. SBS 2008 is designed to be installed with a single network adapter. If SBS setup detects multiple NICs all but one will be disabled. The NIC must use a private IP address with a 255.255.255.0 subnet mask. The following IP ranges are supported: 10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255 172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255 192.168.0.0

  • Issue Using RWW to Access the Console Session

    [Today's post comes to us courtesy of John Bay] We wanted to make everyone aware of a minor issue we recently discovered during the testing of Vista Service Pack 1 and Windows Server 2008. The remote web workplace has the ability to connect to the server console session. This is an optional checkbox exposed under the optional settings link. If you use a Vista SP1 or a Windows Server 2008 system to connect to the SBS server, the log on to or resume the console session of the remote computer will no
