  • Check Out My 5 New Windows Server 2008 R2 Screencasts

Hey IT folks, Back on July 30th, 2009, I presented what ended up being a pretty highly rated webcast on Windows Server 2008 R2 entitled “How Windows Server 2008 R2 Affects Your IT Infrastructure” . And as I’ve done in the past, I promised that soon after I would record the demos and get them up on TechNet Edge as screencast demo recordings. Well, they’re up there now! “Hey Kevin.. that was July 30th? And here it is September 4th? That not very ‘soon after’, dude.” Sorry “dude”. I got busy with other

  • NEW Bigger Discount on TechNet Plus Subscriptions!

Whenever I present a live TechNet Event , I ask my audience to raise their hands if they are a TechNet subscriber . Usually about 1/3 of the audience raises their hand. Considering that this is typically a Microsoft-friendly audience, I'm a little shocked that there aren't more hands going up. The TechNet Subscription is such a great resource for IT Pros, for these reasons: Downloadable (or delivered, if you subscribe to the disks-delivered-to-you-monthly subscription), full-version software licensed

  • BITS, IAS, VSS and RRAS May Stop Responding on SBS 2008 With a Particular NIC Driver

[Today's post comes to us courtesy of Justin Crosby and Damian Leibaschoff ] We are investigating an issue with certain Intel PRO / 1000 EB with I/O Acceleration network card drivers on Windows Server 2008 that can cause the BITS service to become unresponsive after a few hours to several days of operation. When that happens, the entire Network Service hosting service (SVCHOST) also goes unresponsive causing the COM+ EventSystem to also become unresponsive. This can cause issues with the following

  • Viewing Folder Sizes in Explorer

Good morning AskPerf.  Today’s post is a very short one, but it does address one of our most common Shell / Windows UI questions.  That question is, “Why can’t I see the size of folders in Windows Explorer?”  The simple answer is that the behavior is by design.  You can view the size of folders by hovering over the folders in Windows Explorer (as shown below): The primary reason why the Windows UI does not provide this functionality is performance.  Every time you navigate

  • Windows Desktop Search and the implications on WAN performance

Windows Desktop search (WDS) is a great tool to help you to search through the unwieldy plethora of documents or emails that you may have scattered across your desktop. With the addition of 3rd party IFilter add-ins, it makes it even easier to find what you are looking for. As of version 3.01, Desktop search has disabled the indexing of online mailbox on a default installation due to performance implications on the Exchange server side. Companies sometimes have the need to still run Outlook in Online
