  • Installing the Windows Server 2008 R2 RC on a Lenovo ThinkPad T61p

Windows 7 sure got the attention of a lot of you this week, but let’s not forget big brother, Windows Server 2008 R2 also shipped the release candidate.  Considering Hyper-V is a core tool for me and many of you, I was eager to download and install the RC bits on my Lenovo ThinkPad T61p. The good news is that many of the core drivers you’ll want, install directly from the Windows Server 2008 R2 RC DVD.  These drivers are known as “inbox” drivers.  A couple of drivers will also flow

  • Testing the Sprint U300 3G/4G wireless card

Sometimes it’s fun to get out on the bleeding edge of technology. Sometimes not. It’s decision time for the Sprint U300 I have. Keep it and hope Sprint updates Sprint SmartView to work with Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, or return it now and revisit it later this year when they light up the Dallas area with 4G high speed coverage. I think the smart money is on the return. I tested three of the five operating systems I need this device to work with. It works on Windows Vista Enterprise SP1

  • Here are some great UC demos – Roundtable and Laptop UC

John Weston is the subject matter expert on our team for the Microsoft unified communications products.  He recently setup his camera at a meeting and captured some demos while talking to the audience.  If you haven't seen these products in action, be sure to watch both of the following videos.  Once you start playing the video, double click it to go full screen. • Setting up your laptop to run SCVMM 2008

Now that System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) 2008 has released, I’m sure many of you are wanting to kick the tires.  The good news is that we’ve made that relatively easy to accomplish on a laptop but there are some assumptions to make so let’s discuss a couple of them. First and foremost you’ll need a machine capable of running the x64 version of Windows Server 2008 .  I’ll assume you are most interested in running Hyper-V .  With that in mind, you’ll need a decent CPU,

  • Installing Windows Server 2008 x64 on the Lenovo ThinkPad T400

If you decide to flatten your Lenovo ThinkPad T400 or W500 and install another operating system, the good news is that all of the core drivers are on the Lenovo Support Downloads and Drivers area .  I installed two different operating systems to check this out.  Windows Server 2008 Enterprise x64 and Windows Vista Enterprise x64 .  I did not install each and every software component you would normally see from Lenovo if you bought directly from them.  For instance, I do not install

  • Lenovo ThinkPad W500 - mini review

I recently had the opportunity to take a look at the Lenovo ThinkPad W500 (model 4061-2KU).  This machine is really similar to my ThinkPad T61p in many ways, but there are some improvements that have been made in some key areas.  Click the image at right for a high resolution image of the ThinkPad W500. Video The W500 I received has the “switchable graphics.”  What this really means is that is contains two video chipsets and you can swtich back and forth between them.  The W500

  • Who's your Daddy MacBook Pro? The ThinkPad T61p

I've been hearing for months and months how great the Apple MacBook Pro is at suspending and resuming from sleep, and how Windows Vista sucks. Don't believe it. My Lenovo ThinkPad T61p thumped the MacBook Pro handily in my testing yesterday afternoon. Just like my previous testing, I decided to time a series of tests that seem pretty real world to me. This time around I didn't test Windows XP. I tested the Apple MacBook Pro and OS X against the Lenovo ThinkPad T61p with Windows Vista x64 SP1. For

  • Installing Windows Server 2008 EE on a Lenovo ThinkPad T61p

This morning I installed Windows Server 2008 Enterprise x64 VL on my Lenovo ThinkPad T61p. The VL stands for volume license and it allows me to activate via our corpnet KMS server or through MAK key activation. The bits I installed are likely the RTM bits. They are still being hammered and the build I installed has not been declared the shipping version just yet. Patience grasshopper. The installation is really painless. In fact, if you are doing a Core install, you simply won't believe how fast
