  • For Sale – some gadgets and goodies

I am going to start selling off some of the stuff taking up space in my drawers and home office.  Some of this stuff is in mint condition so be sure and let me know if you have any questions.  All of the photos are just stock photos from the internet.  If you are concerned about wear and tear on any of the items, let me know and I’ll take a few pictures with my digital camera. My wife has an ecommerce site for her costume business so I created a section there so I could easily take

  • Testing the Sprint U300 3G/4G wireless card

Sometimes it’s fun to get out on the bleeding edge of technology. Sometimes not. It’s decision time for the Sprint U300 I have. Keep it and hope Sprint updates Sprint SmartView to work with Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, or return it now and revisit it later this year when they light up the Dallas area with 4G high speed coverage. I think the smart money is on the return. I tested three of the five operating systems I need this device to work with. It works on Windows Vista Enterprise SP1

  • Last cell phone post for a while

I'm sure at this point you're tired of hearing about my trials and tribulations in the world of cell phones.  I can't say I blame you.  It's time to move on to more important things like Windows 7 Beta 1, Windows Server 2008 R2 betas, and some of the other goodies we have in the virtualization pipeline. If you read the bottom of the Samsung Omnia post , you saw that I returned the device and have settled on the Sprint Palm Treo 800w as my device of choice for the next 12 months. I ended

  • The best Windows Mobile 6.1 phone on the market?

I have a Palm Treo Pro arriving tomorrow.  It was a pretty tough decision to purchase the device.  The primary reason is because it is an expensive device.  But in the end the funding came through in some unexpected ways so I made the plunge. A little over a year ago, I managed to luck into a free Palm Treo 750 .  We were at TechReady which is the internal training we go to each year.  At one of the Exchange meetings, the Palm folks handed out brand new Palm Treo 750’s

  • Congratulations to Apple and at&t !!!

Regardless of the hiccups today on activation of the Apple iPhone 3G, you have to hand it to Apple and at&t on what appears to be a pretty decent product launch.  I mean after all, how many people played “sick” or “hookie” today in order to stand in line all day and buy an iPhone? Let’s see, what was the temperature at the Apple store today in Southlake, Texas where I live today?  101 degrees baby.  What was the temperature of my home office today where I was at?  74-75.

  • Class Reunion GPS Mashup

I have often wondered why it is that I live in a popular part of Texas, yet I never see anyone I know from high school or college.  It makes you wonder if we are really like two ships passing in the night.  Sure we see a radar blip on the screen and know not to come too close, but we never really look people in the eye anymore, so you wouldn't really know if you just walked past an old best friend.  Maybe we just look too different from when we were sixteen. Or maybe you're at a concert

  • Walt spills the beans on new iPhone release?

Walt Mossberg was filmed talking about a lot of interesting subjects a couple of days ago. He went on a bit of a rant about the lame broadband connections most people have in the US. In fact, he singled out Verizon. I thought that was pretty interesting considering he has a Verizon FIOS fiber connection (or so it seems). I don't really disagree with him. I think everyone in the US should have a 100meg fiber connection, too. While he was talking about the barriers to successful adoption of download

  • HP 6910p notebook received - first impressions

Santa keeps bringing me toys and it isn't even Christmas yet.  This time I received the long awaited HP 6910p notebook computer.  I like to do first impression posts pretty quickly on new hardware because first impressions count, and I forget about the out of box experience later. In the spirit of transparency you should know that HP is sponsoring my team this fiscal year although the year is half over and we just got the machine.  I don't know what that means, but I'm guessing we'll

  • Would someone please bring a good phone to the US ?

Let's face it, the Windows Mobile device market in the US just isn't as fun as the markets in other parts of the world.  Sure the Apple iPhone is fun and popular, but it doesn't sync my email.  I'd like a kewl phone that is first and foremost, a phone.  I would like it to be small.  I would like a keyboard that is unobtrusive. I need my phone to access my corporate email.  It needs to have a delete key.  Grin. It would seem the HTC Touch Dual fits the bill nicely.

  • Go Walt Go

Walt Mossberg has a bur under his saddle. He's shall we say, just a tad frustrated with the current situation in the US cell phone market. I think he did a great job of highlighting some of the issues we have all been dealing with the past few years, and I doubt many end users would disagree with him. The wireless telcos will no doubt try to refute a lot of what he says. So go read, " Free My Phone ". Do you agree with him? Time to stick it to the man... On a different topic, Walt has his Ethics

  • Office Communication Server 2007 - trial download

For the past few weeks my team has been using Office Communicator Server 2007 . From my laptop, I can make a telephone call, receive calls, route calls to voice mail or other telephone numbers, ring multiple phones at the same time, hold multi point conference calls and utilize webcams, etc. All of the whiz bang unified communications offer an interesting array of presence features. See the Quick Reference Card for a good description of the client side view. I particularly like the corporate address

  • Verizon ships VZAccess for Windows Vista - PC 5740 updated

Verizon is making progress updating the drivers and VZAccess Manager software so that it is compatible with Windows Vista. Take a look at http://www.vzam.net , their official download site. For those of you using the PC 5740 card like I am, you can download the current version of VZAccess Manager directly from http://www.vzam.net/uploadedFiles/VZAccess_6.2.4_1641c-5740.exe . Keep in mind that this version and link are subject to change so it's probably best to start at the main website. The software

  • What is your mobile device doing?

Have you ever looked at your Windows Mobile device and wondered what all of those little indicators mean? What? You mean you didn't read the fabulous manual (rtfm) and memorize the indicator section? Now you don't have to. Mike Calligaro posted some great information on the subject to the Windows Mobile team blog about the indicators. Interesting stuff. I'd like some indicators to tell me when my connection is smoking fast or sucking wind.

  • Test your Windows Mobile device speed

He with the fastest device wins, right? Ok, maybe your device is getting smoked by your girl friend. If you want to check how that little speed demon is doing, goto http://text.dslreports.com/mspeed?jisok=1 from the browser on your SmartPhone or PocketPC device and run some tests. If you are a Sprint PCS EVDO customer, you currently rule the roost according to the results at http://text.dslreports.com/mspeed?domains=1 . Verizon is in second place although it appears they have twice as many samples

  • Verizon Motorola Q Update - bad news for me

I was all gung ho about the Motorola Q . I was so hopeful I finally had a phone in my sight that would fulfill my requirements. But it appears Verizon has released it without some key capabilities I want. I filled out the paperwork, scanned my employee badge and send all of the paperwork to my Verizon corporate rep last Thursday. Then I got the call of death from my Verizon Rep on Friday… He told me that in the initial release of the Motorola Q by Verizon Wireless , there won’t be any
