  • My Favorite Windows Vista Runtime Improvements (RTI)

There’s an acronym from the past for you. Run Time Improvements (RTI). I am always looking for ways to squeeze another speed improvement out of Windows Vista . In fact, a few weeks ago I made some changes to my Dell Latitude D820 and it made a very real difference in how the machine performed. Before I list out all of the stuff below, keep in mind I am willing to sacrifice some features for the sake of overall system performance. I’m usually looking for all of the horsepower out of my machine for

  • Windows Vista SP1 is coming and I'm digging it now

One of the benefits of working for a software company is watching a product release develop then ship. Of course sometimes dogfooding software has pitfalls so some would debate the "benefit" statement. It's pretty rare for our internal MSIT folks to mandate dogfooding a product before we release but it happens on occasion. We're getting really close to RTM for Windows Vista SP1 so I dropped one of the RTM release candidates to my Lenovo Thinkpad T61p. The experience has been very good so far. I really

  • How do you notify users of updates?

As you'll recall, I posted some information about the Microsoft IT organizations implementation of WSUS and how it affected a number of users. You can read those gory details here . Well, I'm sad to say the saga continues... To recap, I'm a mobile user. I am rarely connected to the "corporate" network. My Windows Update Client is pointed at some internal servers so it chokes if I manually try to check for updates and I am not connected via VPN. I reported that pretty widely internally and of course

  • People, Process and Technology sometimes collide

I'm the people part of the equation. Recently the process and technology ran right over me and turned me into IT road kill. So what happened? Could it have been avoided? Definitely... Let's set this up by describing my typical work environment. Like many field employees, I am a mobile worker. When I am traveling I use a variety of internet connections. When I am home, I use my broadband isp connection. I am in the office about 3-5% of the time so it's rare to have a corporate connection. Know Your
