  • The World Wide Computer.

Viel Vergnügen bei unserem Auswärtsspiel! posted by Wolfgang Tonninger

  • 2010 New Year's Resolutions & Beer Selection, Simplified + 2009 blog in review

On December 15, 1999, I was sitting in my home in England (near Reading), having just wrapped up a trip to Salzburg to fix a huge problem related to classified pagination. This work was sandwiched between several Y2k conversions (in reality it was more like "2004-proofing" due to the size of the field containing the count of seconds from the system's base date). I was exhausted, done with traveling, in dire need of Mexican food (I defy anyone to find great Mexican food in Europe), and very much over

  • The New Bing Maps – Freaking Cool!!!

It has nothing to do with security – I know but it is very, very, very cool!!!! We just released the new Bing Maps explorer ! The first thing you will see is that we integrated Photosynth and Silverlight . So, no tiles anymore when loading a map. It just comes smoothly. And zooming in to photos is not possible as well – it rocks. But that’s just the start. Remember the days, where you tried to understand which map version (Road, Aerial, Bird’s View) just fits best based on the data which is available?

  • 5 Years at Microsoft

It's a small thing, but fun. Today I was given my 5-year service award for Microsoft. With a brief ceremony and a few jokes about how much more gray hair I have these days, I am now the proud owner of a new conversation piece. Just like Star Trek, I have a crystal that is seemingly capable of recording my memories and replaying them at will. Unfortunately I don't have the glamorous history of so many people at Microsoft have. I do not have an expensive MBA, nor was I a catch in the college recruiting

  • I get your strategy, but where are you hosting your data?

With all the talk about Azure at PDC09 today, I cannot help but observe the inevitable language correction required to once again accommodate the technology lexicon. "On-premise" vs. "On-Premises." Many, many people are throwing the words around, as if they are interchangeable. Dictionary.com has the following definition for "premise" If you are a stickler for accuracy, "premises" would be the correct term to refer to applications, data and services hosted at your local facility. Not that anyone

  • One Week Done, Only Two More to Go..

For Exchange and SharePoint that is. Directory is now only two weeks long, so they are at the halfway point, and OCS is entering their final week. Busy busy right now. It's been a great week in my room, or at least, I think it has. CAS and Transport done, survey scores are in, and they are great, as expected. This weekend the class have been busy studying, but also having a go at the Practise Qual Lab I set up for them. During the course of the weekend I have been getting emails from the class as

  • Yup, I think these puppies will do the job......

Just getting the labs checked over for the Exchange session which starts Monday and I recently got some new toys... I think 48 GB of ram, 16 cores and 2TB of disk per candidate server should be enough for a lab or two... don't you? I've got 16 vm's running, and still have 10Gb free. Of course, when we go to Exchange 2010 next year and start creating multi node DAG's and RPC Client Access Arrays... that will soon eat it up... for now, nice speedy labs, here we come. <addition on Nov 11th> Someone

  • Busy Month Ahead - So Be Prepared

We're in the third and final week of SQL now, OCS starts on Monday (Adrian flying in this weekend so fingers crossed no delays...) and a week from Monday, Exchange, SharePoint and Directory all start. It's a busy month ahead. If you are coming to one of these rotations, remember, get here nice and early, get ready for a long first week, and whatever you do, don't be late, especially to my program. If you do, you'd better know the words to " I'm a little teapot " because I might ask you stand at the

  • Lost and Found

Having recently received a price of over $300 to replace a lost car key, and past experience losing cell phones, cameras, other items that fall out of my pockets and cost a bunch to replace, I signed up today for a Lost and Found Label system. Looks like there a few companies in this business, but not a lot of web chatter on who’s best or who has the best return rate. So, picking the company with the best logo – I sent $5 bucks off to U-Found.Org for a set of key tags, pet tags(1), and 20 other labels

  • OpsMgr can monitor everything: The Coretech Coffee Monitor Management Pack – 0.0.0.1

How cool is this? Coretech has created a coffee monitor MP. This management packs can be used to keep track of the level of coffee in left in the pot. With this management pack, you will never run dry of, what we all know, is the most important part of a productive environment! This is mostly made as a proof of concept, as this technique can be transferred to other monitor types. It could be expanded with other types of sensors, like a weight to check the level of coffee instead of a camera, or a

  • Was man gegen krankhaften Informationshunger tun kann

  • Hacking Your Life (oh oh...)

A Virginia woman discovered that her married boyfriend had other girlfriends, and she decided to seek revenge online. According to federal prosecutors, she hired computer hackers to help. Elaine Cioni paid hackers $100 [U.S] for the password to her boyfriend’s AOL e-mail account, according to prosecutors, and for an extra $100, she received the e-mail passwords of her boyfriend’s wife, children and one of his girlfriends. No one had a clue she had access. The Washington Post recently reported that

  • Greater Internet Dickwad Theory

I stumbled across the below picture the other day and I think that it is so true that it is worth linking to here :-)   I have always said that it is amusing how big people’s egos (I was going to put something else here, but I censored it) can grow when they are cowering behind the glorious anonymity that the Internet extends them, it makes the perfect platform for them to spout their inane views of others and of the world.  It happens via email, forums, chat etc., but it is especially
