  • The IT Manager Podcast Series Goes on the Road

This episode, we tried something totally new, and as with all new things there are usually lessons learned along the way! The Heros Happen Here event , launching Windows Server 2008, SQL Server 2008 and Visual Studio 2008 happened last February but instead of bringing our guests into the studio to talk about it, we went on the road! I spent the day at the launch event talking to various people. And boy, did I talk to people! We video taped everything and ended up with so much footage, that it's taken

  • Using SharePoint to Aid Internal Collaboration

Way back in February, Microsoft put on a huge event to announce the launch of Windows Server 2008, Visual Studio 2008 and SQL Server 2008. Seems so long ago now! I was there, along with thousands of others, taking in the keynotes and hanging out by the "Ask the Expert" area. While there, I also had the opportunity to talk to a couple of IT professionals who were involved in some interesting projects at their companies. Not necessarily on the launch product technologies, but still with some of the

We're seeing all sorts of commercial uses for this technology and its use is impacting many disciplines, including movie animation. In this podcast, I have the opportunity to talk to Mark Lange, Director of Technology at Great Northern Way Campus, about how the school is using HPC

  • A Small Business Rolls Out Vista and Office 2007

Alan is the top IT guy (as well as the only IT guy) for a small vibrant company call AGSI located in Hornby, Ontario , just west of Toronto. I visited him at their funky new office location earlier this week to talk about his Vista and Office 2007 deployment project. He's currently about 75% complete having rolled out 30 computers. Unlike larger organizations, a company like AGSI doesn't have a lot of automation in place and Alan has to be creative and well prepared in

  • Reducing the Cost of Managing Desktops

One of the first major IT projects that I took a lead role in was to roll out a new email client application to approximately 300 workstations. It was a tremendously daunting task as there were no automated tools at the time (this was in the mid 90's) and a large part of the project was organizing all the IT staff who had to go out and manually do the installations. Myself and another colleague had put together step by step instructions to be followed. It went fairly well, all things considered,
