Hyper-V RC Released

Today Microsoft delivered the Hyper-V release candidate (RC) code broadly to customers and partners. This is a key milestone signaling that Microsoft is on track to deliver Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V virtualization by August 2008.

Hyper-V RC is a feature-complete version and has three main enhancements from the beta release:

An expanded list of tested and qualified guest operating systems including: Windows Server 2003 SP2, Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP1, Windows Vista SP1, and Windows XP SP3.
Host server and language support has been expanded to include the 64-bit (x64) versions of Windows Server 2008 Standard, Enterprise, and Datacenter - with English, partial German, and partial Japanese language options now available and the ability to enable the English version of Hyper-V on other locales.
Improved performance & stability for scalability and throughput workloads.

The release candidate provides updated, near-final code that customers and partners can download at http://microsoft.com/Hyper-V to begin planning and testing the end deployment scenarios.

With less than 10% of all servers virtualized, Microsoft has a broad set of cost-effective products (spanning the desktop to the datacenter) that position the company to take advantage of significant growth opportunities in the virtualization space. Hyper-V provides customers with efficient and cost-effective virtualization infrastructure software, and now with the availability of the latest test code, Microsoft is one step closer to making virtualization a reality for customers.

Windows Server 2008 and Forefront Client Security Deliver a “Safer Together” Solution

The Forefront Client Security Service Pack 1 and Forefront Client Security / Windows Server 2008 Network Access Protection (FCS-NAP) integration kit release date is coming up soon. As part of the Windows Server 2008 Launch Event, the integrated solution was demonstrated in Los Angeles today.

Microsoft Unveils Windows HPC Server 2008

Microsoft today released the first public beta of Microsoft Windows HPC Server 2008, a server operating system and tools designed for the fast-growing high-performance computing (HPC) market. Microsoft also kicked-off the Parallel Computing Initiative, a program creating a set of common development tools across multi-core desktops and clusters.

Windows HPC Server 2008, the successor to Windows Computer Cluster Server 2003, is based on the Windows Server 2008 operating system and is designed to increase productivity, scalability and manageability. Windows HPC Server 2008 has been renamed to reflect its readiness to tackle the most challenging HPC workloads. Key features include new high-speed networking, highly efficient and scalable cluster management tools, advanced failover capabilities, a service oriented architecture (SOA) job scheduler, and support for partners’ clustered file systems.

The beta is available for download today at www.microsoft.com/hpc; the final version will be generally available in the second half of 2008.

Today at IT Forum, Bob Kelly, corporate vice president in the Server and Tools Business at Microsoft, announced pricing, packaging and licensing for Windows Server 2008 and introduced a new product, Microsoft Hyper-V Server. Specifically:

The Windows Server 2008 lineup includes the following familiar editions -- Standard, Enterprise, Datacenter, Web and Itanium.
Microsoft Hyper-V was introduced as the official name of the server virtualization technology within Windows Server 2008 (previously code-named Viridian).
Microsoft also announced Microsoft Hyper-V Server, a stand-alone version of Microsoft’s virtualization technology that includes only the Windows hypervisor and additional components needed to support virtualization. Complementary to the Microsoft Hyper-V technology within Windows Server 2008, this stand-alone version allows customers to consolidate workloads onto a single physical server.

Continuing Microsoft’s efforts in the virtualization space, Kelly also announced the Server Virtualization Validation Program. Beginning in June 2008, vendors will be able to self-test and validate certain technical requirements of their server virtualization software running Windows Server 2008 and prior versions. The program will enable Microsoft to offer cooperative technical support to customers running Windows Server on validated, non-Windows server virtualization software.
