Running &amp;quot;netstat -o&amp;quot;, TCPView, PortQry, all that nonsense...&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I knew I had connectivity because the VMWare host box was able to connect to the server just fine. It turned out to be a proxy issue. As soon as I set the proxy and turned on the 'Bypass proxy for local addresses', I could connect.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Perhaps the various KB articles which witter on about DCOM permissions, NETWORK_SERVICE accounts etc might like to add this simple step as a first fix attempt!&lt;/p&gt;
