The Top Three Rookie Mistakes - Part 1
As the popularity of Microsoft SoftGrid/App-V continues to accelerate at a record pace, it seems that there's an ever-increasing number of folks who are new to SoftGrid and anxious to jump right in and stream their first virtual app. While overall SoftGrid is pretty easy and straight forward to implement, there are a couple gotchas that tend to trip up the first time admins. I'll be detailing these over the next couple days so if the role of SoftGrid Admin is in your future then you'll want to be sure and check these out:
Issue #1 - Failure to create and share your Content folder.
The first common mistake new SoftGrid admins make is failing to create the \Content folder share. When you install the SoftGrid Virtual Application Server, you are prompted to specify a name for your content directory (\Content is the default). This is the folder that will hold your virtualized applications and is the folder clients will connect to in order to stream them. If this is your first SoftGrid server install then it's easy to get the impression that the setup program automatically creates that folder and shares it to the appropriate group for you. Actually that doesn't happen. It is up to you to create this folder share and assign the appropriate permissions. Mine looks like this:
What you should do
Once your server installation is complete, find the folder you specified as your content directory. Share this folder (leave the share name 'Content') and make sure that the Everyone group has at least Read permissions. That's it!
Piece of cake, right? Well that should cover issue #1 - next up is the Default Content Path.
