INTRODUCTION

This article describes the support policy for Microsoft SQL Server products that are running on a virtual machine in a Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V environment.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft SQL Server 2008

Microsoft supports and provides technical assistance to customers who run SQL Server 2008 on a virtual machine in a Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V environment except for such configurations as documented in the SQL Server 2008 Online Book under the Hardware and Software Requirements for Installing SQL Server 2008 section. For example, the documentation in the virtualization section states that SQL Server 2008 failover clustering (also known as guest failover clustering) is not supported on a Hyper-V virtual machine. Therefore, Microsoft does not support or provide technical assistance to customers who run SQL Server 2008 in this configuration.

897615 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/897615/) Support policy for Microsoft software running in non-Microsoft hardware virtualization software

Microsoft SQL Server 2005

SQL Server 2005 is not fully supported on a virtual machine in a Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V environment. Microsoft is considering whether to provide support for SQL Server 2005 on Hyper-V virtual machines in future updates of SQL Server 2005. However, Microsoft Customer Services and Support provides support and technical assistance for customers who run SQL Server 2005 on a Hyper-V virtual machine exactly as it provides support and technical assistance for SQL Server 2005 on non-Microsoft hardware virtualization software as documented in Knowledge Base article 897615.

Additionally, the restricted configurations for SQL Server 2008 also apply to SQL Server 2005. For example, Microsoft does not support or provide technical assistance to customers who run SQL Server 2005 in a failover clustering configuration.
