Symantec's motives are more transparent than Vista's Glass. :-)

First PatchGuard, then WSC, then Windows Defender, and (as you mentioned) discounting OneCare as competition, but always trying to use it for leverage when it's convenient, and let's not forget their FUD campaign that's been increasing the closer Vista gets to RTM.

Symantec and many others in various markets need to actually add value and compete in the marketplace rather than always looking towards governments to manipulate markets. Competitors that don't actually compete are very unlikely to interest me (or keep me interested) in their products. As should be well-known history (especially since it's so recent and repetitive), Symantec will lose a lot more customers than it gains with these tactics.

re: Symantec's Plea : Protect our Protection Racket

I was just discussing this yesterday with a collegue. I think the tactic that Symantec has chosen on this front is reflective of their only real choice to deal with this. I would much rather see them introduce a better product and try to compete on that level. Innovation will almost always sell, attacking your competetion in the press is a poor marketing strategy. We could all name examples of those who have tried this approach in the past and we know how well it works out. Novell can cry foul all they want, but don't spend all your reserves on legal fees. Develop a better, superior product and then market.

JMHO...

Regards,
Anthony

re: Symantec's Plea : Protect our Protection Racket

I had blogged about them a while ago; they're pathetic and blatantly transparent.

Lately I am amazed at the brouhaha over PathGuard. Even McAfee (aren't they your IE phishing partners?) is in on it.

I say, F* em. Do not let them or anyone else touch kernel binaries. Keep the security center as the unified front-end to the security oem's.

And what's with the lawsuit they filed on this "Volume Management Technology"? Man you guys sure pissed them off...

I assume running on Vista it wouldn't have kernel level access and it would minimize the threat. :-)
