Interesting Issue with Major Implications

Hi ,

I had an interesting issue with a customer recently.

After a recent promotion of a couple of Domain Controllers , it came to light some time later that users were able to set their passwords to 0 e.g. minimum password length = 0.

On investigation what was discovered was the following.

When the Domain controller was promoted a secedit script was run. This had been part of a server build process for sometime. It was normally run on completion of the normal member server build was run.

What was included in the secedit.db script was the following critical entries to our discussion;

MinimumPasswordAge = 0
MaximumPasswordAge = 42
MinimumPasswordLength = 0
PasswordComplexity = 0
PasswordHistorySize = 0
LockoutBadCount = 0
RequireLogonToChangePassword = 0
ForceLogoffWhenHourExpire = 0

Secedit configuration that was run

copy x:\abc\xxx\secedit.db c:\secedit.sdb /y

secedit /configure /db c:\secedit.sdb /cfg x:\abc\xxx\xxxabc.inf /overwrite /log x:\abc\xxx\error.log /quiet

attrib +h c:\secedit.sdb

This script was run using Domain Admins credentials

The result of running this command After the Domain Controller was promoted was the following Behaviour;

The Default Domain Account Security settings were overwritten by the “new” Secedit.sdb settings above. This overwrote the settings that are getting applied via the Account Security section in the Default Domain Policy.

Note this is expected behaviour because of the way Domain Controller reads its Security settings.

Information below taken from a Gary Olsen blog of 2005.

“Domain controllers provide security settings to domain users at logon time. This is a critical (and confusing) concept. The user's machine doesn't pull the security settings from the GPO at startup as it does for other machine settings. The client gets the security settings when the user is validated. The security settings that domain controllers apply to clients upon a successful user logon are those that are stored in the DC's local secedit.sdb security database. The DC gets the Account Security settings from the domain policy and applies them to its local .sdb. Note that this applies only to the account security settings, not to any other policy setting. DCs then replicate their local .sdb with each other.”

Note: If you modify block the Default Domain Policy applying to the Domain Controllers it is likely to exhibit this behaviour. Especially if the blocking or modification of the secedit.sdb is leaving the Domain Controller with insecure settings.

Therefore DO NOT run any modification to the secedit.sdb on a Domain Controller. Also do not block the application of the Default Domain Policy to the Domain Controllers OU. Please see previous blog links for further information.

It can potentially have serious implications.

The Microsoft Assessment and Planning (MAP) Toolkit is an agentless toolkit that finds computers on a network and performs a detailed inventory of the computers using Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) and the Remote Registry Service. The data and analysis provided by this toolkit can significantly simplify the planning process for migrating to Windows® 7, Windows Vista®, Microsoft Office 2007, Windows Server® 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008, Hyper-V, Microsoft Application Virtualization, Microsoft SQL Server 2008, and Forefront® Client Security and Network Access Protection. This tool checks your computer for infection by specific, prevalent malicious software (including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom) and helps to remove the infection if it is found. Microsoft will release an updated version of this tool on the second Tuesday of each month.

The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool checks Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2003 computers for and helps remove infections by specific, prevalent malicious software—including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom. When the detection and removal process is complete, the tool displays a report describing the outcome, including which, if any, malicious software was detected and removed. The tool creates a log file named mrt.log in the %WINDIR%\debug folder.
Note that x64 version of this tool will only run on Vista x64, Windows XP x64 and Windows 2003 x64 computers.
This tool is not a replacement for an anti-virus product. To help protect your computer, you should use an anti-virus product.
Microsoft will release an updated version of this tool on the second Tuesday of each month. New versions will be made available through this web page, Windows Update, and the Malicious Software Removal Tool Web site on Microsoft.com.
To have the newest versions automatically delivered and installed as soon as they are released, set the Automatic Updates feature to Automatic. The version of this tool delivered by Windows Update runs on your computer once a month, in the background. If an infection is found, the tool will display a status report the next time you start your computer. If you would like to run this tool more than once a month, run the version that is available from this Web page or use the version on the Malicious Software Removal Tool Web site.

Backing up and Inventory….

This morning I am backing up all of the machines on the network. Of course backing up is one of the most boring things there is (until something goes wrong!) so I am also inventorying my machines as well as the stash of hardware in my closet. All the while, the Media Center PC in my living room has been flattened (again!) and had some hardware swapped and is now getting the Windows 7 x64 Ultimate bits slapped down on it. I am guessing it will be at the “name your PC prompt well before I finish this post.

My goal for this whole project is to go from 4 machines running my network down to 3. Since I am going to virtualize most of everything I have decided to just build a brand new domain to replace the existing one. That way I don’t interrupt operations and I can take my time building things out. My current setup looks like this -

Humvee – this is my Hyper-V/SCVMM Server. It hosts two VM’s right now. This is a quad-core box with 8 gigs of RAM in it.

Crashnburn – this is my Exchange 2007 Edge server. It is one of the VM’s on Humvee.

Wallace – this is my web server and SQL server. It is the other VM hosted on Humvee.

Sleestak – a DC/Fileserver on physical hardware. this is a machine I want to virtiualize and eliminate the hardware for.

Bobobobobobobo – this is the “main” DC. I am going to leave this machine on physical hardware.

Wallofvoodoo – my ISA2006 Server. This will also remain on physical hardware though it will get wiped in the near future moved to new hardware and become a Forefront TMG machine.

The plan for today is to start building out a new DC for the domain and start setting up accounts. I am not going to migrate account information though because I want to organize my OU structure more logically that I had before and I just plain want a fresh start.

Ugh….. a few lines into this post, while backing up some data to a fileserver (I have two Buffalo Terastations that I store backups on), a drive died in one of the Terastations. Just so happens that is the server that I was backing up to. So now it is time to backup the backup! Fortunately I am RAID5 on that Terastation so data is intact. Normally I would rant and rave about it, but those two Terastations have been workhorses for me. I purchased them both at the same time and they have run nearly 24x7 for 7 years. It was time for a drive to fail.

Looks like it is going to be a busy day!

Issue Fixed: UserProfileGenerator load problem for AV and Appsharing scenario
Explanation: As mentioned in the release notes for the previous OCS 2007 R2 Capacity planning tools release, UserProfileGenerator was generating incorrect load for AV and Appsharing scenarios. This QFE fixes this issue and UserProfileGenerator should generate correct load for various load settings: low, medium & high.
Issue Fixed: Ocsstress needs a _Total instance
Explanation: A “_Total” performance counter instance was added to Ocsstress. This new instance makes it easier to monitor Ocsstress performance counters.
Issue Fixed: Ocsstress should not update the CallsFailed counter for 486 , 603 etc decline specific responses
Explanation: Ocsstress was wrongfully reporting calls which received valid responses such as 486 busy, 603 decline as calls failed. These calls are no longer marked as failed and are considered a successful call-routing scenario.

ILMerge is a utility for merging multiple .NET assemblies into a single .NET assembly. It works on executables and DLLs alike and comes with several options for controlling the processing and format of the output. See the accompanying documentation for details.

Overview

ILMerge is a utility that can be used to merge multiple .NET assemblies into a single assembly. ILMerge takes a set of input assemblies and merges them into one target assembly. The first assembly in the list of input assemblies is the primary assembly. When the primary assembly is an executable, then the target assembly is created as an executable with the same entry point as the primary assembly. Also, if the primary assembly has a strong name, and a .snk file is provided, then the target assembly is re-signed with the specified key so that it also has a strong name.
ILMerge is packaged as a console application. But all of its functionality is also available programmatically.
There are several options that control the behavior of ILMerge. See the documentation that comes with the tool for details.
ILMerge runs in the v2.0 .NET Runtime, but it is also able to merge v1 or v1.1 assemblies. However it can merge PDB files only for v2 assemblies.
Currently, ILMerge works only on Windows-based platforms. It does not yet support Rotor or Mono.

Brief Description

Install this update to help prevent an issue in which users may experience intermittent Bluetooth device failures.

This package integrates the ‘F5’ experience of launching the Visual Studio 2008 MPI Cluster Debugger and your Windows HPC Server 2008 environment, for a better and more integrated debugging experience. This package provides a new tool window from which you can specify on which nodes the debugging will take place on the cluster. Once your break points are set and the debugger settings are specified you only have to press ‘F5’ to launch the debugger. Pressing ‘F5’ deploys your application binaries and the remote debugger, and submits a job to the scheduler. When the job is scheduled the MPI processes start under the control of the remote debugger.
This package also includes a project template for C/C++ MPI programs.

The documentation is designed to describe each protocol in detail as it is used by the Microsoft Exchange Server. Each protocol specification documents the technical requirements, limitations, dependencies, and Microsoft-specific protocol behavior.
The documentation set includes a set of companion overview and reference documents that supplement the technical specifications with conceptual background, overviews of inter-protocol relationships and interactions, and technical reference information.

System Center Configuration Manager Extensions for SCAP

Brief Description

The extensions enable Configuration Manager 2007 to consume Security Content Automation Protocol (SCAP) data streams, assess systems for compliance, and generate report results in SCAP format by taking advantage of the compliance checking capabilities inherent in the desired configuration management (DCM) feature.

Overview

Your organization can optimize its existing Configuration Manager 2007 infrastructure to ensure that the computers you manage meet this federal compliance requirement and generate the requisite FDCC reports for the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB). The System Center Configuration Manager Extensions for SCAP convert SCAP files into DCM Configuration Packs for use with Configuration Manager 2007 and they convert DCM compliance reports into SCAP format. This release includes a user guide that provides instructions for using the command-line tools, and detailed information about the mapping between the SCAP data formats and the DCM format.
The System Center Configuration Manager Extensions for SCAP includes the following components:

ConfigMgr_Extensions_for_SCAP.msi: This Microsoft Windows Installer (.msi) file includes the command-line tools that you use to convert SCAP data files to DCM Configuration Packs and also convert DCM reports into SCAP format and the following two documents.

A new set of APIs is being introduced that will enable application developers to take advantage of the new Windows Mobile 6.5 touch gesture framework. The gesture APIs allow an application to handle touch gesture input and provide a visually consistent experience with the rest of the device UI. Note that the gesture APIs are only available on the Windows Mobile Classic and Professional SKUs. The headers and libraries are installed in the Windows Mobile SDK\Pocket PC\ folder. Samples that make use of these APIs are installed into the Windows Mobile 6.5 Developer Tool Kit\Samples\ folder.

URL Rewrite Module 2.0 provides a rule-based rewriting mechanism for changing requested URL’s before they get processed by web server and for modifying response content before it gets served to HTTP clients.

Overview

Microsoft URL Rewrite Module 2.0 for IIS 7 Beta is an incremental release that includes all the features from version 1.1, and adds support for outbound response rewriting. More specifically, it can be used to:

Replace the URLs generated by a web application in the response HTML with a more user friendly and search engine friendly equivalent.
Modify the links in the HTML markup generated by a web application behind a reverse proxy.
Fix up the content of any HTTP response by using regular expression pattern matching.

The installation package includes several additional components and hotfixes required by URL Rewrite Module 2.0 Beta. Refer to the KB articles for the hotfixes to get more details. In order to apply the hotfixes correctly without restarting the server, it is recommended that the WAS service is stopped before installing URL Rewrite Module 2.0 Beta. The following hotfixes will be installed with URL Rewrite Module 2.0 Beta:

The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool checks Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2003 computers for and helps remove infections by specific, prevalent malicious software—including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom. When the detection and removal process is complete, the tool displays a report describing the outcome, including which, if any, malicious software was detected and removed. The tool creates a log file named mrt.log in the %WINDIR%\debug folder.

To have the newest versions automatically delivered and installed as soon as they are released, set the Automatic Updates feature to Automatic. The version of this tool delivered by Windows Update runs on your computer once a month, in the background. If an infection is found, the tool will display a status report the next time you start your computer.
