Roderick White Indroduction

Hello

My name is Rod White.  I first want to thank Stephanie for inviting me to join her blog team. We hope to give you information on how to troubleshoot and resolve issues with tools and Log files and not just how to read KB articles and latest issues.

First, let me tell you a little about my technical background.  I first started Microsoft support in 1996 working on the Networking team.  After a year and a half I moved to the Domains team.    In 1999 I had the opportunity to start on the SBS 4.5 team.  At the time I wasn’t too thrill with the move from Enterprise Support to Small Business Support.  After 7 years supporting SBS4.0, SBS4.0a, SBS4.5, SBS2000 and SBS2003 this was like the Greatest move I could have made looking back.  WE SUPPORT EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!

My first goal is to try and enhance everyone’s knowledge about FAX and fax troubleshooting.  Then branch out to other topics like vpn tools and ipsec tunnels.  I’m currently trying to focus my Area Of Concentration (AOC) on fax configuration and troubleshooting.

Let’s keep in touch,

Rod

Well Known Ports List

Maybe you did not know it but your computer contains a file that has a list of the well-known ports that are used by services.  This file contains port numbers for well-known services defined by IANA.  This file is located on servers and client computers.

Go to the %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc folder and open the services file with notepad.

Enjoy

Understanding Domain Replication

Replication is the process of copying Active Directory data between domain controllers to ensure that they all have the same information.  The Windows Server 2003 multiple-master replication capabilities make the entire replication process more complex than it was in Microsoft Windows NT.  On a Windows NT network, servers write all domain directory changes to the primary domain controller first, which then propagates the information to the backup domain controllers.  This process is single-master replication. In Windows Server 2003, administrators can modify Active Directory by writing to any domain controller. All the domain controllers execute periodic replication events that copy their modifications to all the other domain controllers. The schedule and topology for these replication events differ depending on whether the domain controllers are at the same or different sites.

OWA Returns HTTP 1.1 503 Service Unavailable Error

I came across an issue that was well worth documenting and sharing.

Some of the symptoms that you may see for this issue include:

OWA returns the following error

HTTP 1.1 503 Service Unavailable

Also, you can get the following.

Active Server Pages error 'ASP 0201'

 Invalid Default Script Language

The default script language specified for this application is invalid.

The resolution was to set the permissions on the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT key back to the default.  They had been modified and set to just Everyone.

The default permissions for the key are:

Administrators - Full Control, Read

Authenticated Users - Read

CREATOR OWNER – Special Permission (Inherited)

Server Operators – Read (Explicit), Special Permissions (Inherited)

SYSTEM – Full Control, Read

During initialization, the Exchange OLE DB provider (ExOLEDB.dll) scans the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT hive to identify registered file types. If any subkey has a default value that exceeds 259 characters, or if there is a discretionary access control list that is not valid on one of the keys, ExOLEDB may quit unexpectedly and prevent the OLE DB provider from initializing.

To be complete, there are other causes of this error.  Probably the most common one is detailed in KB 296626.

Hello... about myself!

My name is Stephanie Doakes.

I have been working for Microsoft for 9 years; 6 years as a full-time employee and 3 years as an outsourcer.  I started out working on the Domains team working with NT 3.51 and connecting DOS and WFW clients to the domain. Thank goodness we have evolved!  I started out studying, and earned my CNA before coming over to Microsoft and beginning my studies for my MCSE.

I became a Tech Lead for the Domains team while working as an outsourcer.  I then interviewed and came onsite as a full-time employee with Microsoft.  I started on the Domains team, which is now known as the Directory Services team.  Within a year, I became a Technical Lead for that team and I remained in that role for 3 years.

I was an early achiever on maintaining my MCSE on 4.0, 2000, and 2003. I have also completed the ISA 2004 exam this year. It was a bear so I would in no way consider myself an expert but I love the product.

After starting my family and going on maternity leave, I decided to take the leap and change teams.  I moved over to the Small Business Server team to expand my knowledge on the technologies that I was supporting. I have been on the SBS team for the past 3 years or so. It's been so long, it's all a blurr....but it's a good ride!

I do hope to provide you with good technical information that will assist you in your day to day troubleshooting of issues within your environment.  Also, things that may help you get along better in your environment.

I will also provide you with issues that we see here on the SBS team that may be helpful to you.  Be aware SBS is not a different beast.  The bits are the same as Windows Server 2003.  SBS just adds special wizards to make the administrator's job a bit easier; a whole lot easier.

SBS is one product that completely disproves the saying of "You get what you pay for" because you get WAY more than what you pay for when you purchase SBS.  It is GOLD!

Enjoy
