Demystifying System Center – Do I need a Standard, or Enterprise Management Pack?

System Center management packs for servers now ship as standard or enterprise for Operations Manager (OM), Configuration Manager (CM) and Data Protection Manager (DPM).

Standard management packs are normally for basic Windows Server functionality (File, Print, Networking etc). Enterprise packs are for complex application management such as Exchange Server or Active Directory.

Configuration Manager 2007

  • Advanced task sequencing;
  • Vulnerability assessment
  • Software and hardware inventory for environments running server operating systems.

As Basic in addition to

  • Full application and server desired configuration management
  • proactive management of systems for configuration settings that follow an industry-leading framework for managing information in changing regulatory and business environments;

Data Protection Manager

  • Backup and recovery management of file servers
  • Data Protection Manager 2007 Enterprise Server ML
  • Backup and recovery management of applications (eg SQL, Exchange, SharePoint etc)
  • Microsoft System Recovery Tool
  • DPM to DPM replication
  • Host-based virtual server backup functionality.

 

Also note that there are steps up SKUs in place in case a machines role changes from basic to advanced so that a Standard OML/ Server ML can be upgraded to an Enterprise OML/ Server ML.
