963654   Cumulative update packages for the 2007 Microsoft Office core suite applications and for 2007 Microsoft Office servers: February 24, 2009

963656   Cumulative update packages for Office 2003 SP3, Project 2003 SP3, Project Server 2003 SP3, Visio 2003 SP3, SharePoint Services SP3, and SharePoint Portal Server 2003 SP3: February 24, 2009

Here is a short summary of the fixes.  I’ve highlighted what I thought would be useful to mention to our clients.

Performance Improvements

Startup:

·         Unnecessary operations removed or deferred) 2x speed increase over RTM or SP1

General:

·         Outlook index speed up w/folder switches/sorts [new index used]. This WILL launch a new screen as this new index is created (Preparing Outlook for First Use) Must Run - Expect this to take minutes to 10 of minutes per OST/PST.  Runs per profile - per PST/OST - per PC.  No way to turn this off.  Cached Mailboxes in the OST will also be indexed.  For me this tool 42 mintues for my 1 GB OST and 22 GB of PSTs. Obviously mileage may vary.

·         Improvements for SSD (solid state drives)

·         PST/OST write changes may cause PST/OST to grow up to 5% - 20% (can be turned off)

Shutdown:

·         Outlook never closes (thus you get the OST/PST check @ next startup) - we no longer wait for external references - so 3rd party solutions may be effected - controlled by the registry.

·         New ICON in taskbar (Outlook grayed with an X in it).  This means OL has exiting (shutting down).

Calendar improvements

·         ALL resiliency bug fixes included (70 bugs - kb968009 is public list)

·         New Sync Order

1. Security settings

2. calendar

3. Selected folders

4. Contacts

5. Drafts

6. Inbox

....

·         Conflict resolution changes (prevents many of the "cannot save changes" errors before due to open windows or multiple updates out of order) - basically we save before sending meeting request - May still happen in Online mode

New Logging

·         EnableCalendarLogging (DWORD) 1 in ETL format in the \%temp%\OlkCalLogs folder

New Switch

·         /reportleakedrenitems ran during OL is running (ghost calendar entries held in memory preventing updates to meetings)

Time Zone tool removed

·         use the new timezone tool instead.

New file extensions blocked

·         4 Files (.osd .hpj .cnt .vbp)

New Junk E-mail functionality

·         New infobar txt advising who (What) moved the message to Junkmail folder, such as Outlook Junk e-mail filter, Server-side anti-spam application, or undetermined.
