Google? No! Flight Sim!

Found at a forum at Avsim dedicated to Microsoft Flight Simulator X:

Google Earth vs FS X

Nice round up of comparison screenshots, also comparing several 3rd party add-ons in Flight Sim 2004, and how close it does and doesn't come to the press shots of FSX we've released so far.

I have not played FS but the screenshots start approaching what I've seen in other games in terms of constant low level flying fun. Can you do things in FSX that you could do in Stunt Island game 10+ years ago or Battlefield? Fly through tunnels, barns/warehouses, bridges (and land) etc?

Flying the copter in BF1942 was awesome since it took a lot of practise before you could land of roofs etc. And getting the F16 fly through a narrow bridge, there was maybe 3 "pixel" margin.

Those games have little overall relevance to FS, but to me it is important that you must be able to have some fun and challenge in the actual flying, not the realistic type of "go through these 50 steps before take off and then engage autopilot" challenge which is what I believe Flight Simulators series is really about (if it is any realistic that is). Is there a way to tune down the realism and go do some stunt flying such that you can succeed with less practise than it would require in the real world?

Mr./Ms. Droid,

I think that you'll find the upcoming release will offer a better experience across the board-- for both our hardcore (realism junkies) and our novice users. We're adding a more structured gameplay element that should help all users experience some of the pure "fun" factor of aviation.

I realize that sounds like a marketing mouthful, but it's true. This version ought to allow for more of what you seek without destroying the legacy of relaism we continue to build upon.

Cheers,

Jason

IMHO, Google Earth doesn't cut the mustard - the buildings aren't even textured to look like buildings - they're grey blobs! And you can't fly cool planes around it either! :-)
