Miscellaneous? No. Just a set of things not categorized into other categories.

Our illustrious studio manager sent out a link to an article on videogame aesthetics and the idustry's push for "photo realism." I found it interesting, especially as it gives a shout out to some favorites from my former life in the comic book industry: Jim Woodring, Chris Ware, Paul Pope, Peter Kuper, Mary Fleener, Kyle Baker, Scott McCloud, and Frank Miller. I've worked with at least four from that list (well... I did production work on their books anyway...).

If you haven't read Scott McCloud's seminal work on comics Understanding Comics yet and you're involved in any media industry, you're missing out.

Big news in the 3D industry. As mentioned over in Steve Lacey's blog, Autodesk is up to some movements (shennanigans?.)

Yesterday they announced "Autodesk will no longer offer Gmax® software as a stand-alone product." Considering how many add-ons for Flight Simulator 2002 and 2004 are made using gMax, I expect that the add-on community will be err... alarmed at a minimum.

Today several ACES studios members including (but not limited to) Mike Gilbert, Steve Lacey, Adrian Woods (our Technical Art Lead), and myself met with a representative from Autodesk to talk about gMax and the recent acquisition of Alias. I can't talk too much about the specifics of the meeting, but we (ACES) certainly conveyed the depth of usage gMax has in the FS community alone, and that Autodesk needs to make sure they don't leave their thousands of gMax users in a virtual backwater.

We don't have a concrete (or official) statement or plan of action at this point, but the ACES team is very committed to making sure that there's a solution for current users of gMax in the FS add-on community and a great solution moving forward.

As you may (or may'nt) have noticed above, today we welcome Adrian Woods to the growing number of ACES studios bloggers. Welcome aboard Adrian!  Adrian's take on the whole Autodesk/gMax thing can be found here.

Hal Bryan, has a very nice post on his blog about the Flight Simulator "mod" community and how it gets no respect. Hal wants more readers.

Speaking of Hal...

We have a lot of space nuts here in ACES studio (Hal being one of 'em), lot's of us tracked the Ansari X-Prize and were ecstatic when SpaceshipOne made history. So as a New Mexican and space cadet, can I say how jazzed I am about the idea of the X Prize cup?

"Autodesk will no longer offer Gmax® software as a stand-alone product." ... Dumm De Dumm Dumm, Dumm De Dumm Dumm Daaaaaaaaa!! Very sneaky those chaps at Autodesk!

I'm anxious to see what all pans out from this ... The whole community (who uses Gmax, of course) is anxious!!!

Oh darn... Just as I have started to get really, really good with both Max and GMax... ;)

Hopefully, we won't get "orphaned" in the process...

Bill,

I'll say this, if you've gotten "really good with both Max and GMax," then regardless of the outcome you ought to be fine. Even if in the future we have to use oh, I don't know... "Super Magic Fairy Dust (tm)."

The important part is the expertise with 3D, the concepts involved, and any associated technologies.

ACES is a Max shop, but we could use Maya or XSI or "Super Magic Fairy Dust (tm)" if we have to. Same goes for you.

The important part is to minimize any pain you as a member of the third party community has to go through, and at this point we don't know if there'll even be *any* pain.

Cheers,

Jason

PS There;s no such product as ""Super Magic Fairy Dust (tm)." ;)

Thanks, Jason. I've long known that any tool is only as "good" as the hands of the artist who wields said tool...

As proof of that concept, one need only look at the Eaglesoft Citation X, or one of Dave Eckert's fabulous models to see what even FSDS2 is capable of delivering. Were it not for a few glaring shortcomings (such as the inability to parse MakeMDL.parts.xml), it is an extremely capable tool.

Where Max and GMax shine of course, is the sheer range of available tools that may be used, but at the end of the chain, mesh is mesh... ;)

Bill,

Yah Louis has done good things for the community (long before there was a Gmax). And for those who don't know what we're talking about...

FSDS is a stand alone 3D authoring tool written for flight sim:

# re: Miscellaneous? No. Just a set of things not categorized into other categories.

Hi Jason, thanks for the interesting and enlightening blog. :)

It is disappointing but not surprising that Autodesk have discontinued Gmax as a standalone aplication given that it has been stuck at version 1.2 for a long while.

I notice that the free version is still available as a download at Turbo Squid http://www.turbosquid.com/gmax If that remains available I guess all that means in the short term is that any possible cool new 3D features, possibly things like normal mapping, if included in the next FS can't be achived via the Gmax route.

The XSI mod tool looks interesting http://www.softimage.com/products/Mod/v4/ At first glance it appears to be a similar concept to Gmax. But will it remain around too?

As Bill has pointed out the mod community has been around for a while and no doubt will continue to do so. Gmax opened the door to an extent and encouraged many more to take up the hobby and no doubt encouraged many people to buy the main 3DS Max application.

The future will be interesting to say the least. :)

From what I saw, I don't believe that... there is definitely some kind of magic going on in those offices.
