The Flight Simulator experience and other tangential thoughts
Moving Carriers

We do now have landable carriers that move in FSX. They are configurable so that you can move them as fast as you want. Because these carriers can now move, there is no need to rely solely on wind speed to be able to get aircraft off the deck. We even have a mission where you can make an emergency landing on one (although the military frowns on such behavior).

What we don't have (yet) are carriers with working catapults and arrestor cables, but I've already heard from some third parties that will have that when we ship.

I love carrier ops as they are very challenging and fun to do, and I'm very pleased we were able to do this in FSX.

Paul, from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU for this. I have been vocal to Jason and Mike about this feature and discovered I could add a moving carrier in the demo, so I am pleased with this feature.

Looking forward to the release, keep up the great work!

Regards, Michael

I have managed to upset someone with my post on carriers, so I edited the post in attempt to clarify something. I'll add a little more here. In the past, to have a chance at carrier ops you would have to crank up the wind speed to mimick having forward ship speed so you could takeoff. Now that we have a moving carrier(s), wind isn't as much of an issue. If you want the carrier to cruise at 45 knots, then set it up to do that. If a carrier can really only go 35 knots, but you want 42 knots of headwind, then add a 7 knot headwind. It's all about relative wind and now you have plenty of options to simulate it however you want.

There also seemed to be some confusion on maximum wind speed (not that it really matters in this context). We have played with flying backwards in the Beaver with 100 knot winds, so I don't think we have any wind speed limits that are particularly limiting.

There was also a question about having a player piloted carrier in MP that other MP players in aicraft could land on. We don't have any player operable carriers out of the box, but that doesn't mean someone in the community won't do such a thing. I don't have any idea how well the moving landable platforms work in MP, and whether or not they are syncronized.
