Playing on a 5 ½ inch pitch...
I liked this phrase so much I had to share it. The saying 'Playing on a 5 ½ inch pitch' (that's 13.75cm for the more modern measurer) refers to the space between your ears where your brain is located. Now for those that know me you will know that sporting analogies is not my strongest area, but I thought I would give it a go for this post. I understand from my sporting friends that when a pitch is involved it's a game of two halves but I still see IT solutions being played with only the technical half. I speak with many partners about how they engage with customers and most work closely (sometimes exclusively) with the IT department. This is only one half of the game and going forward I think the strongest half is going to be the engagement with the business side. This is not to say that the IT department is no longer important, they are, I'm saying that 'Business Change' has a higher business value than just 'Technology Change'. The work we have been doing around 'People Ready Business' highlights that positive business change can be enabled with technology, but to win you need to play a game of two halves.
