If you follow the System Center solution set, you’ve seen that over the past few weeks there has been quite a bit of activity.  Beta versions of Service Manager, Data Protection Manager, and Essentials were released.  Plus, early in September, Jeff announced the plans for Configuration Manager R3 and there will be more information on that coming soon.

Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 has RTM’d!

That’s right, just yesterday the latest update to System Center Virtual Machine Manager was released to manufacturing – and the evaluation version is available for download now!

VMM 2008 R2 Features

VMM 2008 R2 now manages many of the great new features of Windows Server 2008 R2 RC Hyper-V including:

  • Live Migration -- for moving virtual machines between hosts with no downtime

  • Additional enhanced migration support for SAN migration in and out of clusters

  • Multiple virtual machines per LUN using Clustered Share Volumes

  • Hot add of virtual machine storage

Additional features:

  • Functionality to migrate storage for running VMs

  • iSCSI target and SAN-based migration across clusters

Virtualization Event Recap

Yesterday we held a virtualization event at our Microsoft office in NYC.  To those who attended, THANK YOU for joining and for the great questions.  For those who might have missed it, we are holding a similar event at our NJ office on April 2 – click to register.

During this half-day event Todd did a great demo of Hyper-V R2 Live Migration, and we talked extensively about how System Center manages the dynamic datacenter.  I showed a shortened video of System Center in action – here’s the link to the full video.
