Got RAM?

Published 08 April 08 08:15 PM | nking

One of the coolest parts of my job is getting to use and influence new software, but recently a group of us had a slight moment as I plugged in my new upgrades.  Check this out; Dual Quad Core with 32GB of RAM goodness.  I still grin when I see 11GB of RAM not even nudging the usage chart.

So why would a SMB need this much RAM.  Well, more than likely they wouldn't, but then of course if we continue with Moore's law then who knows.  SBS 2016 anyone?

Honestly, though it's for Hyper-V testing.  It was this system that I presented the 5w/50 series off of last week.  Virtualization opens up a number of questions for us, as well as a huge number of opportunities.  It's definitely the hot topic at the moment so expect a whole pile of posts and information from us about Hyper-V in the SMB.

Well if you look at the memory allocation found at http://blogs.technet.com/askperf/archive/2008/03/25/lock-pages-in-memory-do-you-really-need-it.aspx

then you can see that a 32GB dual Quad Core will probably run both server instances of SBS2008 Premium quite nicely (but not much breathing room though).

Although given the high number of SQL instances that you now find on a Win2003/SBS2003 box (my SBS box has 11!), 32GB might just survive three years' of use!

The way I'm using Vista at the moment, a dual Quad Core + 32GB RAM sounds nice...
