Monthly Service Update: June 2009 Release Notes
The Microsoft Online Services Monthly Service Update for June 2009 delivers two important capabilities for Microsoft Online Services:
· Increase to 30 MB for Exchange Online attachments.
· Support for Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 client for Exchange Online
Following are release notes for the June 2009 release:
Exchange Online Attachment Size Increase to 30 MB
Prior to the June 2009 release, the maximum allowed attachment size for email sent via Exchange Online was 20 MB. The June 2009 release increases maximum attachment size to 30 MB. However, the maximum attachment size depends on the attachment.
Users should remember that transport encoding (the information that allows messages to be safely sent and read) is automatically added included in the calculation of attachment size. Thus, allowable file size of attachments may be less than 30 MB to accommodate the required transport encoding.
Support for Outlook 2003
Organizations can now use Outlook 2003 to work with Exchange Online. Prior to this update, customers could use Office Outlook 2007 or Microsoft Office Outlook Web Access (OWA).
Organizations should be aware of the following considerations when using Outlook 2003 with Exchange Online:
Free/Busy and Offline Address Book Inaccessible in Outlook 2003
You cannot access free/busy and offline address books (OAB) information when using Outlook 2003 with Exchange Online.
The workaround for free/busy information is to use Outlook Web Access (OWA) to access the invitee’s free/busy information.
The workaround for OAB is to use the Global Address List (GAL) to look up user information, which requires that the client computer be online.
Suggestion: You can disable automatic Outlook OAB downloading by editing the following registry key.
|
Key |
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Cached Mode |
|
Value Name |
DownloadOAB |
|
Value Type |
REG_DWORD |
|
Value |
0 = the offline address book is not automatically downloaded, and Outlook must contact the online Global Address List. |
External Out of Office Does Not Work in Outlook 2003
External Out-of-Office (OOF) notifications is a feature introduced in Outlook 2007; Outlook 2003 does not have separate settings for external OOF. Therefore, if you set OOF notifications using Outlook 2003, you set it for both internal and external recipients.
The workaround is to use OWA to set internal and external OOFs.
Upload/Download Time for Large Attachments Might Be Long
Upload/download time for large attachments might be long, depending on the network bandwidth between the client computer and Microsoft Online Services data center.
If the upload/download session times out, consider breaking apart the e-mail message into several e-mail messages, each with smaller attachments.
Office Communicator Shows Outlook Integration Error
When using Outlook 2003 with Business Productivity Online Standard Suite, Office Communicator 2007 will show an Outlook integration error because there is no free/busy support in Outlook 2003. There is currently no workaround for this issue.
Upgrading Outlook 2003 to Outlook 2007
When you upgrade from Outlook 2003 to Outlook 2007, free/busy and OAB information might still not be available.
The workaround is to delete the existing Outlook profile (from Control Panel – Mail – delete existing profile), and then use the Microsoft Online Services Sign In client to create a new profile.
Large Mailbox Size Causes Slow Response
Outlook 2003 becomes very slow when your mailbox is large. We recommend that you reduce your mailbox size to less than 10 gigabytes (GB); and ideally make it smaller than this.
Outlook 2003 Prompting for Credentials
Occasionally, you may be prompted for credentials by Outlook 2003.
The workaround is to enter the correct user name and password, and optionally select the “do not prompt for credentials in the future” check box.
Outlook 2003 and Sign In Client
The Microsoft Online Services Sign In Client will work with Outlook 2003 as it does with Outlook 2007. There is no change in the user experience, and no update to the Sign In Client is needed.
