Mac Single Sign-On Application Usability - Different Default Browsers

The Mac Sign-In Application provides Mac users with similar capabilities as that of their Windows counterparts.  The Mac Sign-In Application, in addition to being a launch pad for the Business Productivity Online Suite, provides the ability to collect and submit user credentidals signing in to Microsoft Online Services, such as:

  • Exchange Online e-mail
    • Entourage 2004/2008/2008 EWS
    • Outlook Web Access (Browser Based Email)
  • Live Meeting
  • My Company Portal

The My Company Portal link in the application has a requirement to use Safari 4.0 or higher in order to successfully log the user into an organization's SharePoint Online site collections without prompting for credentials.

If the user's machyine is configured to use FireFox as their default browser and they click the My Company Portal link, they will be taken to the Login.aspx page.  They can click the Go Directly to the Company Portal button, however they must enter their Microsoft Online Services credentials when prompted:

Mac Firefox Default Browser - BPOS-S Company Portal

If the user instead has Safari 4.0 or higher configured as the default browser, the user will be automatically directed to the MyCompany Portal with the user's credentials silently passed under the covers when requested, and the user is automatically signed into the MyCompany Portal without being prompted for credentials:

Hi BPOS Team

I've been testing and trying.. Testing and trying... writing usernames and passwords. Resetting default browser to Safari 4.03... Everytime I try to log in, I get the message: Wrong username or password. When I write the exact same thing om my windows client, everything works perfect.

I use:

Snow Leopard

Mail.app

Safari and/or FireFox

Evrything is updated to the latest version.

The Mac, is a persoanl machine so i don't log in using a AD on it...

Do you have any idea why this won't work?

Well, this sucks Im afraid. You ought to make it abundantly clear that this application only really supports Safari. I have open support issues, and spent ages trying to figure them out.

Note that when I set Safari to be my default browser, all my other applications which have stored information on my computer open in Safari and dont work as expected because Ive really never used Safari before and there are no stored cookies or remembered passwords etc.

At #SPC09 in Las Vegas Microsoft made a great play of browser interoperability.

You need to support the main browsers on the Mac, Safari, Firefox and Camino at a bare minimum with your application.

Are you planning to ?

Ulrich G. Bojko,

You may get repeated login requests if you don't install the single-sign on application by dragging and dropping in the applications folder.

Angus- As IE is the native browser for Windows, so is Safari to Macs. Everyone using the Sign In app on Windows use it with IE regardless if they have stored information on other browsers. If you need to use those services you have stored on other browsers, you just need to open the browser and use as usual regardless if you use Safari as your default browser. It is not possible for Microsoft to support all available browsers on Mac simply because there are more important things to do, besides they also have their own OS to cater to instead of trying to bring Macs up to speed (that should be Apple's job), also because there are hundreds of browsers, and Camino is certainly not one of the main browsers based on user-base. And if those applications you need to use are really Mac-compatible, they will work just fine on Safari, so start getting used to it. While for the most part MSO is usable on any browser, full functionality is mainly supported on IE on Windows, do you seriously think that will change on a Mac?
