Configure Blackberry Internet Service for Microsoft Online Services

This article provides instructions to connect your Blackberry Internet Service (BIS) account with Microsoft Online Services.  BIS only provides e-mail synchronization with Exchange Online.

  1. Go to your wireless provider's BIS site.
  2. Click Setup Account.
  3. Enter your e-mail address and password.
  4. At this point, BIS autodiscover prompts you for additional information.  Select the radio button for the option I will provide the settings to add this email account, and then click Next.
  5. On the Select Account Type screen, select the radio button for the option This is my work email account, and click Next.
  6. On the Set Up An Existing Work Email Account screen, select radio button option for I can access my email account using a Web browser (Outlook Web Access), and click Next.
  7. Enter the OWA URL for your location as follows:

Your Microsoft Online Services e-mail account should now be successfully added to your list of "Valid Email Accounts" for Blackberry Internet Service. A new mailbox will appear on your Blackberry shortly.

The BIS infrasturcture is run by Research In Motion and your wireless provider, and these instructions may change as the service is updated. As mentioned previously, BIS provides e-mail connectivity only.

I'm really glad you provided some insight on how to use the MOS platform with Blackberry devices but I still hope you plan full integration with blackberry devices in the future.

I love the pricing structure and the strength that MS provides for the MOS service, but since I use a blackberry and have no intentions of ever giving it up (sorry - WinMobile just doesn't compare) I can't use it, or suggest it to my other clients until you have complete support for blackberry enterprise server.

Please please please swallow your pride and offer BES service so that myself and others can use your service and have full sync capabilities with my blackberry.

If you don't use/pay for BIS...you can also add a  try 3rd party solutions like the product:

http://www.astrasync.com/

It's a hosted service that connects to MS Online using the activesync protocol on your blackberry.  Our firm has done a lot of MS online migrations, and someone always prefers a blackberry ;)

Personally, I use Windows Mobile very happily.  Also, activesync works with and Nokia's, iPhones, and even Google...I would ask that BB get ActiveSync support.

@JohnnyG,

There is another ActiveSync client option for the Blackberry called NotifySync, http://www.notifycorp.com/products/notifysync/index.htm.

@Explorer,

We also offer hosting of your BES in conjuction with MS Online, please contact your MS Online sales rep for more information.

Maybe MOS should take a look at NotifyLink as well (NL is NOT the same product as NotifySync, but still from the same vendor). While NotifySync is a good solution in many cases, NolifyLink is a much better candidate to replace a BES... with the same (I think at some points even better) security and granular controls for the IT manager, but WAY cheaper. And NL allows a mix of devices too, so one can opt for a Windows Mobile, a BB or any other smartphone ....

Why don't you host some NotifyLink servers aside of a BES hosting offer ????

When configuring this for a Telus blackberry user the URL for https://red001.mail.microsoftonline.com didn't work...but https://red001.mail.microsoftonline.com/owa worked fine.

Hi

Can you fix the user instructions on TechNet for configuring BIS to reflect the correct URLs as per this blog.

Currently http://technet.microsoft.com/en-au/library/cc742556.aspx tells the user to use the "Outlook Web Access address listed in URLs for Microsoft Online Services". It needs to say "Use the Mobile Device address listed in URLs for Microsoft Online Services".

Thanks
