Gartner advise for Pandemic Planning

The recent swine flu outbreaks highlight the need for organizations to have pandemic plans in place. Gartner has comprehensive research related to pandemic planning that can be found here.  Immediate steps for organizations to take include:

  • Monitor www.pandemicflu.gov and other government and public-health sources to determine what actions are appropriate to ensure workforce safety and continued business operations.
  • Download and examine the FFIEC’s “Pandemic Flu Exercise of 2007 After Action Report” immediately, and disseminate their findings across your organization. To the best of our knowledge, this is the only large-scale testing of business pandemic plans ever conducted.
  • Review pandemic response plans to:
    • Identify existing and projected critical skills shortages
    • Initiate necessary cross-training, testing or certification of personnel
    • Ensure that cross-trained personnel have the appropriate system/applications access rights
    • Determine which business operations are sustainable, and at what level, and the likely downtime for normal business operations during periods with absenteeism rates of 40% or higher
  • Immediately initiate rigorous, ongoing and well-documented testing to isolate and remediate identified problem areas.
  • Prepare for travel restrictions to be significant in the event of an epidemic and near-universal in the event of a pandemic.
  • Implement a communications program that ensures that all personnel are aware of the enterprise's pandemic response plans, as well as measures they can take to limit the spread of disease — including practices as simple yet effective as regular hand-washing.

XP Mode for Windows 7

To ease the application compatibility issues for migrating to Windows 7, Microsoft is going to incorporate the Virtual PC technology in to the Windows 7 operating system. The Windows XP applications will be published and run within the Windows 7 Desktop to achieve a seamless user experience. See the Windows team blog announcement here.

All you need to do is to install suitable applications directly in Windows XP Mode which is a virtual Windows XP environment running under Windows Virtual PC. The applications will be published to the Windows 7 desktop and then you can run them directly from Windows 7.

See here some snapshots

The Enterprise equivalent of the XP-Mode is MED-V which provides scalability, management, security and other enterprise features. See MED-V information here.

Infection Rates of Windows Operating Systems

The latest Microsoft Security Intelligence Report (SIR) has been released. It provides an in-depth perspective on the changing threat landscape including software vulnerability disclosures and exploits, malicious software (malware), and potentially unwanted software. Using data derived from hundreds of millions of Windows users, and some of the busiest online services on the Internet, this report also provides a detailed analysis of the threat landscape and the changing face of threats and countermeasures and includes updated data on privacy and breach notifications. The sixth volume of the report is now available:

SIR Volume 6 (July through December 2008) and Key Findings Summary (available in 10 languages)

One important analysis is that the malicious software infection rates differ significantly for different versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system. Windows Vista was less infected at any service pack level than Windows XP. Comparing the latest service packs for each version, the infection rate of Windows Vista SP1 is 60.6 percent less than that of Windows XP SP3.
