Xbox 360, the world has no idea

The Xbox team this morning presented a first look into the Xbox 360 for Microsoft employees. Sitting here in the Denver office, watching it over web cast, I think I annoyed the people around me by saying out loud, "Wow", "Oh my god", and maybe a profanity or two.

I wish I could say more, but all I can say is that gamers and our competitors are in for a massive surprise.

Well I was planning on getting the xbox 360 when it came out so I'm sure I'll be plenty happy when I get to kick butt on Live :-)

That's the cool thing, every Xbox 360 will have a "silver" membership to Live for free. Which means that you can download/buy content for games using a credit card. If you want to play against other people, you will need to purchase the subscription to Gold.
The idea being that you can have some connectivity to the outside world and get an idea of what is going on, even if you don't fork out the $$ for a subscription.
It's gonna change gaming, big time, believe me.

Any comments on how poorly 'branchy', single-threaded code (e.g. AI, physics) will run on the in-order Xenon?

Don't worry, it's going to run even worse on the Cell... and while Nintendo hasn't disclosed the core of the revolution, it's a fair bet that it's a 2 core version of the Xenon, so every next-gen box will suck*, although some will suck more than others.

*suck in places... by no means an all-encompasing suckage.

I think we can expect that Xbox, Sony and Nintendo will all come out with fairly equivalent hardware and game makers will have to adapt their apps to leverage the new horsepower. I think the real differentiator will be the platform, where Microsoft will win game manufacturers over with great tools from Xbox Live and the Xbox 360 SDK.

I think the Xbox guys will stay true to the course of making our platform, the best and easiest for game developers. The whole idea of Xbox is to remove all the nasty things about game console development.
