Smart Metering has gained increased attention over the past two years as an opportunity area for IT.&nbsp; <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-11128_3-10269832-54.html?part=rss&amp;tag=feed&amp;subj=GreenTech" target="_blank">CNET</a> rightly noted that they big guns of the industry including <a href="http://www.smart-energy-alliance.com/" target="_blank">Cisco</a>, HP, Intel and <a href="http://www.metering.com/node/13557" target="_blank">Google</a>, are all over smart metering at the moment.</p> <p>The free software essentially provides savings recommendations based on the home's features, usage patterns and appliances.&nbsp; It is built on <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/azure/default.mspx" target="_blank">Azure</a> and <a href="http://www.bing.com/?mkt=en-au" target="_blank">Bing</a> and allows Microsoft Hohm Utilities partners to automatically provision energy use data into the hosted software, although at the moment only 4 US providers have been announced.&nbsp;
