AMR Research declares, "No Doubt About It: Microsoft Goes After ECM"

Jim Murphy of AMR Research has just released brief but very much on the mark analysis about Microsoft’s aspirations for the Enterprise Content Management market with the upcoming release of the Office “12” wave of products and technologies. Here are my favorite quotes:

“Over the next two years, Microsoft will gain control of a huge portion of the ECM market.”

“Microsoft’s ECM [platform] will cover the major market categories for ECM, including firm plans to enhance and stabilize its document management, records management, and Web content management capabilities.”

“Microsoft[‘s] advantage here isn’t about managing a broader array of information. Rather Microsoft’s appeal will be to information workers that are already accustomed to using Office and Outlook.”

“Companies relying on Microsoft Outlook/Exchange, Office, or Windows should decide today whether, when, and how Microsoft will play a role in their ECM strategy. If ECM is to become an application for the masses, Microsoft has a long-term advantage over other vendors, offering a general-purpose foundation in Windows SharePoint Services today.”
